Default FINALLY - Cable Internet access available at home - Now the questions -->

After 2 years of optimum online saying it will be avalable "in a month or 2" They just informed me it is up !!!

This looks like my only choice for broadband - The phone company doesn't have a clue when DSL will be available ?

What do I need as cyber protection ?? Firewall and such ? I am pretty ignorant about this stuff (and other stuff too )... Any other tips I should know about ?

Thanks in advance for your help

Default To be honest..

I have not got anything yet. But, I think the best protection is just to pull the connection when the computer is off, and simply to plug it back in when you turn the computer on.

But, I think Zone labs has a free download for its' basic firewall software.

Default You can go one of two ways with this . . .

you cna get a software firewall or a hardware firewall. The hardware also doubles as your cablemodem! Linsys seems to make the most cost effective one. It comes in a few different flavors. One where you can hook up a single computer or another where you can hook up multiple computers to it. The box handles all of the traffic across your home network and it also keeps out unwanted people. The cost is a few hundred, but I am sure you can find it online for under $200.

The other option is to get a software firewall. If you are not running a server you are better off with a hardware option, less overhead on your computer.

Software options are: BlackICE Defender, ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security and a few others. I am using Black ICE on my NT Server, but plan on getting a hardware box very soon.

Jay, if you are running Win 9.x make certain you TURN off File and Printer Sharing! That is how people can easily get into your computer.

Ask Peter to help you since he lives nearby and does not have anything else to do with his time now that FW is past! lol

Welcome to the land of HIGH SPEED!

Default Linksys BEFSR41 router works for me - $129 @ amazon.com....

...which was the cheapest I could find it anywhere. Supports up to 4 'pooters, has built-in firewall, is a snap to install & configure. I also run BlackIce Defender, but only 'coz I was running it before I bought the Linksys box.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004SB92/ref%3Dpd%5Fgw%5Ftst%5F2/002-1641045-0006424</a

Default No firewall horor story........

Cable modem > network hub > four computer in the house.

left mine on for a few days, forgot to shut down napster (when you hit the X, it really leaves it running in the task bar). My little brother had installed napster while he was visiting for spring break, and was not too smart with how he set up the file sharing......ARGH!

long story short, someone was able to delete my win98 directory (with the the cab files), many of the executables within the windows directory, and the windows registry information. They were then kind enough to put a new label on my hard disk which read: "Handler" w/ a little smiley face.

Needles to say, I did not find this very funny.

It had been less than two months since I had completed a full system reload on this biatch!

Default You ought to at least download ZoneAlarm. It's amazing the numbers of attempted scans I get. (And I

do shut down my PC when I'm not using it.)
