One other question...on the FW trip, I tried out my cruise control and found that it didn't work
I'm wondering if this is related to my spare ECU missing some programming or not having the feature enabled or is the cruise control a completely seperate sub-system? I swear I tried it once before and it worked ok. Not a great loss either way, but I want it to work even if I'm not going to use it.

sounds like it's just 'off' as all the dbw wire cars have it standard
maybe the bentley says how - but there is no 2001 version
mine works and it's really accurate too, the audi cruise seems really good in all the cars I've tried

Check for "G" in the ID code with VAG-COM
Immediately follows engine code & precedes software version number.
Example 1.8L R4/5VT G 0003
Did you switch the cruise switch on before doing adaptation, this is required.

Dave, your 'spare' ie., new chip ECU does not have the cruise enabled...
Happened to me with my Garrett Stage II ECU. This can be programmed with a VAG tool - all the functionality of cruise is in the ECU, you simply need to activate it.
In my case, I had my dealer do it. :-)
