Default OT: Fire danger goes critical weeks early in OR & WA.

Now that I'm guardian of some of the most pristine 40 acres in the Cascade Range and the hundreds of little souls that live on it I'm getting really, really worried about fire. We are WAY down on moisture and conditions are severe. Unless you have been here in the dry you can't imagine how explosive tinder is until you walk on it and hear the limbs pop beneath your feet - bone dry.

And, we are besieged by irresponsible campfire builders, smokers and fireworks freaks (tourists).

Need hopes and prayers for PAC NW.

How much does a 40-acre sprinkler system cost?

Default CB...I can relate as Bend is the driest dustiest place to mountain bike.....

Every time I go to Bend there are charred remnants of a forest. I would be really concerned to the point of having heavy irrigation on your land and keeping it maintained if you have a home there. Just beautiful country but a real troublesome place to not worry...a lot. I thought of a nice condo or house on the west side close in a few years ago because of all the fires west of town knowing it would be a real pain to have to maintain a lot of land. And then you have to be concerned about who owns your neighboring land. Tough predicament this time of year there.

Would not matter w/o water rights - seriously important component of land ownership out west.

Default Honestly, I'm takin' back by the dedication and responsibility

I feel towards this land and it's inhabinants. Life altering to the point that my needs and wants have become completely insignficant to this guardinship. Life altering.

And, I would not trade it for anything.

Default Hopefully, your neighbors are as worried as you are!

I can relate, to a "smaller" degree. We've got 4 acres up near Trout Lake, WA, 1 of 10 lots and our "lot-owners association" is very worried about fire. We are putting in a stand-pipe in our community water main because the pipe diameter is too small for a real fire hydrant. This may save a house or two--but as for trees and critters :-(.

Default Unfortunately - forest fires are a necesssary and natural evil

Actually regular forest fires help keep tinder levels from getting completely out of hand and result in smaller and easier fires to contain. Living in Seattle and having traveled extensively out west, the most dangerous fires over the last few years are those that have happened in areas where fires have not been allowed to burn every once in a while.

One of the problems of living in the wild. Anyway you can build a fireproof dome around your cabin?
