Default Well, awwwwriiiiight! My APR chip saga concludes happily. Persistence paid off.

Yesterday, I tried with no success to use APR's ECU immobilizer-cloning software to enable my chipped ECU to work properly. My laptop would connect with VAG-COM, but not APR's software.

Today, APR e-mailed me a revised version of the program. I installed that on the laptop, and still nothing. I left messages with APR, but I went home depressed.

On the way home, however, I stopped by an Office Depot and bought a 50' ethernet cable and a pass through. When I got home, I installed the software on my home pc, drove my car up on the lawn, and ran the cable from the car, through a window in the front of the house, and into my pc.

I ran the program, and, BINGO! It downloaded the ECU codes, and then I swapped the ECU's and wrote the codes into the new ECU.

The APR chip is outstanding. I really didn't have the best roads to go out and give it a right proper flogging, but I was able to do some full throttle runs in first through third, and off the line it seems a bit quicker, but once above 3000, the fun really begins. The torque curve now seems longer and flatter, as the car just pulls hard right up to redline. Acceleration is much improved, but again, I need faster pastures in which to graze. I'll post more APR chip impressions tomorrow. I'd love to hear from other 225 owners with APR chips and get your impressions.

So far, so good. Real good. :-)

So what was the problem doing it via laptop? Software and serial port hated each other?

Default I'm a bit confused (not an unusual mode for me). If you purchase the spare ECU, why do you have to

do anything. I thought APR, does the cloning based on the number you supply from your OEM ECU. Thence upon arrival, a simple swap out (so I thought) should send one down the road with a wide grin. Please enlighten me - I am still in the decision mode re which chip and which chip setup. Tnx.

immobilizer code is unique to your car - must be cloned to new ECU

Default I guess. The laptop is a Pentium 800 running Win98, my home pc is a 880 Pentium

running Win98. The VAG-COM software ran just fine on the laptop. I even went in and cleared the DTC's with it.

Default If you purchase the spare ECU, it comes blank from the factory. Because of the immobilizer

the new ECU has to be coded with the data from your car's ECU, because, as 20Valves said, each car's ECU is uniquely coded. The serial number off your stock ECU doesn't provide them with the codes needed for cloning.

If I was willing to put up with a couple of days down time without my car (I was not), yes, I could have sent my ECU to APR for them to code the new ECU, and then they send me both back.

Since I already had a VAG-COM, it was a matter of getting the pc and the car to communicate.

Default Anybody remember when....>>

You could whip out the old Unisyn, twiddle the distributor, throw a glasspack on and think you'd done some serious performance mods?? Gawd, now we have to run network feeds to the garage, be a computer guru, and rely on remote programmer decisions too tweek this stuff.......I don't know if this is good or bad....My age must be catching up with me, but it is definitely COOL!!!
