Well, awwwwriiiiight! My APR chip saga concludes happily. Persistence paid off.
Today, APR e-mailed me a revised version of the program. I installed that on the laptop, and still nothing. I left messages with APR, but I went home depressed.
On the way home, however, I stopped by an Office Depot and bought a 50' ethernet cable and a pass through. When I got home, I installed the software on my home pc, drove my car up on the lawn, and ran the cable from the car, through a window in the front of the house, and into my pc.
I ran the program, and, BINGO! It downloaded the ECU codes, and then I swapped the ECU's and wrote the codes into the new ECU.
The APR chip is outstanding. I really didn't have the best roads to go out and give it a right proper flogging, but I was able to do some full throttle runs in first through third, and off the line it seems a bit quicker, but once above 3000, the fun really begins. The torque curve now seems longer and flatter, as the car just pulls hard right up to redline. Acceleration is much improved, but again, I need faster pastures in which to graze. I'll post more APR chip impressions tomorrow. I'd love to hear from other 225 owners with APR chips and get your impressions.
So far, so good. Real good. :-)

If I was willing to put up with a couple of days down time without my car (I was not), yes, I could have sent my ECU to APR for them to code the new ECU, and then they send me both back.
Since I already had a VAG-COM, it was a matter of getting the pc and the car to communicate.
