Default Kinda OT -- my baby has a new butt!

I finally broke down after two years and had a tail put on my 911. I thought it came out rather nice. I've always had a dislike for the 'standard' Carrera tail from the pre-1989 era. I always thought they stuck out way too much, and were too...noticable. This one is a lot more subtle. I could *not* believe the difference it made though. I didn't expect a drastic change it handling characteristics, and everyone told me "Oh, you won't notice that much of a change" -- the car now stays in a straight line when there is cross-wind, at speeds above 65mph (not that I ever go that fast or anything) it sticks like glue to the road, etc. It's a *world* of difference when travelling in a straight line. On the other hand though, I can see how it would make such a difference, with a car that has most of its weight back there, the car is bound to feel like it's about to take off the ground if you don't have something back there pushing it down.

I had planned on getting a snapshot of this thing on the TT, just for humor value. Didn't have time before getting the spoiler put on -- and it was a b1#*!&#!@ch to put on, at that.

Seriously though, adding this thing really got me thinking about changing our stock spoiler. This 911 now handles better at speed (above 65mph), as well as driving in cross-winds than the TT does. The TT always used to run circles around the 911. So, I had been playing with the idea of getting a different more functional spoiler for the TT, but this change really has me seriously thinking about it now. Ugh. More cash to spend.

By the way, the tail is the 'Euro RS' tail, which came from the factory on certain cars (namely, the Euro RS cars! ). *Not* a U.S. imported car -- all the Porsche aftermarket folks (Performance Products, Tweeks, etc) have had them made for selling in the U.S.

Default Nice, I like the drop down sides...sort of like the previous turbo.

Personal preference, I like the lines of older
Carrera's without the tail, but that looks nice and subtle.

Default Exactly how I feel (more)

I've seen tons of Carreras that are in the age-group of mine (mine is an '87), and the stock tail is just.. ugly looking to me. Further, the Turbo version of that era isn't much better (which was also an option). I always loved the later turbo tails, that almost looked like they were 'melting' over the rear of the car. Kind of like they hugged the body more, and stuck out far less. This tail was a good compromise. I couldn't get the later turbo tail for my car without some serious body work being done to the car, and this thing looked similar, so I jumped on it.

I also liked the lines of my car without the tail. I am contemplating buying another decklid for the car sometime in the near future so it can be swapped out whenever I want. Getting the decklid off isn't too much of a hastle. About 10-15 minutes of work to swap 'em. I *do* kind of miss the non-tail look already.

Default Well, they vary, greatly.. (more)

911's tend to vary much more than most cars based on mileage, and of course, condition. Mine is considered "very good" condition, but not mint. I paid $22,000 for the car 2.5 years ago, which was a steal. It should have cost me about 23k. Now, it is worth around 21.5k, only due to the falling market and everything. Before the stock markets started crashing and everything, it had raised in value to almost $24,000. It is starting to go back up again as well now.

Targas I think run a little more than Coupes, and of course, ragtops run even more than the targas. So, if you were to go shopping for a 1987 targa right now, you'd likely be looking at around $22,000 or thereabouts for a very nice condition car.

Of course, you can always scrounge up a car that's not in such good shape for say, $14k-$16k, and do about $3k of work and end up with the same car for less money, but then you have to invest all that work as well.
