Default What to buy?

Hi Everyone,
I'm in the market for a new sports coupe and the audi TT seems like a great car. The only problem i'm having is that I would only be able to afford a 180hp fwd one right now. I currently drive a very fun and tossable 325, and i'm slightly afraid of driving a fwd car. Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated, (maybe I should save up some extra cash and get the 225q next year?).

Quattro, 6-speed and extra power very nice to have, IMO.

Default ok people dont throw me in the bbq...but heres my reply

save up and get the 225 quattro... or barring that get the 180 quattro.... either way... I dont think you'll be super delighted with the 180fwd... thats based on what your driving now... check out reviews on the models... 225 quattro is the best.. the 180 quattro is pretty good to, but alotta of magazines arent that positive on the handling of the 180fwd especially with the ASR feature.... theres alotta of people on the board who have the fwd version but if its performance you seek with a good platform for increasing horsepower and want all road and all weather traction at high speed get the quattro....ive got the 225 q and im happy with it....

Default My 2-cents...

You are kind of coming to a bias group to ask these sorts of questions, but I'll do my best to remain liberal.

Get it, Get it now, Do it now, Don't wait another second, Doesn't matter - just do it - it's soooooo worth it!

Sike.

If your going to get a TT, I would suggest getting the AWD (not the fwd). But if you can afford a 180, I wouldn't wait to save up for the 225 if its going to bankrupt you. If you want more speed, you can always get a chip for a few hundred extra later. Best of luck.

Save for the 225quattro, imo. I've owned both; I prefer the 225.

Default Contrary to popular Forum belief....I recommend the FWD. Here's the scoop:

I'd whole-heartedly recommend a FWD to anyone. Period. I, myself, have one and I've not experienced the famed gear grind problem. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe Audi improved upon its tranny, I don't know -- and I don't particularly care. Mine works great. Perhaps there were some issues with the earlier MY FWD trannys. Until I hear it from AoA (and they stick a 6 speed in my car) I cannot say "don't buy a FWD."

Sit down for this part folks.

I think though (and I'm sure to be chastised for saying this by my colleagues) that alot of people's problems with this tranny are over-exaggerated on this forum. Everyone reads the posts by respectable members that lists everyone who has suspected that they have the problem. Now, lets see the stats on these numbers: How many FWD have been sold, and how many of those have had documented problems (not counting people who read about the problem and then suddenly started noticing their tranny is bad)??? How many of those were non-2001 models?

Let's stop the witch hunt, huh? Let's stop disserving the people who can only afford a 180 FWD car by slamming these cars whenever they ask what we, the current owners of TT's, recommend. Yes, I agree, the 225Q is a slightly faster car -- the 6 speed is highly desirable, and the quattro is a cool, exclusive Audi option. But what it boils down to is simply, I LOVE my car, and will not give it up for anything right now....(now if this TTS manifests.....I'll deny saying that). Mandi and I talked at great length about trading our 180 TTR in for a 225TTR, but found that we couldn't do it. He is special to us now. Please, can't we all stop dissing the FWD as an "inferior", "unrecommended" car. The plain truth is it is more car than the average buyer can handle, FWD or no.

My 2 cents -- keep the change.

Flame suit on -- proceed brethren.

Gee. I've got a 180FWD and love it. It's the original TT that was praised worldwide for its design, performance, especially it's handling - this was all before the quattros were available. Mine is off-road in the winters so I have no concern for the extra traction that the quattro provides. If you want to race or if you live in an area with harsh winters, then perhaps a quattro is for you.

As far as FWD goes, I too was used to tossing a rear wheel drive car around (911) and I find that the TT is the closest I've found once you get used to it. After that it's a no brainer. The handling is crisp and precise and if you want additional performance, a chip can add a lot of horsepower. The FWD is also 250lbs lighter than a quattro which gives it a definite performance edge over the 180 awd models.

If money were no object, well I wouldn't probably buy a TT but as far as a TT - sure - I'd buy a 225 quattro and then add a chip and other performance goodies. but wer'e now talking substantially more money and that would prohibit my TT purchase altogether. So I am extremely happy with my 180FWD as I'm sure ALL those here that have them agree. Mine is a kick *** performer with all the same body and interior components that all the TTs share.

Just my $.02 but I'm tired of being bashed by the 225'ers who think that the 180FWD is a piece of crap - simply NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!

Take the savings and make a nice down payment on a BMW R1150RT. Then on 2 or 4 wheels you'll be grinnnnnnnnnn

Default don't be afraid...

fwd won't bite you. Why are you afraid of fwd? As to the one issue you raise, the TT is not "tossable" in the same sense as a 325 (although, where are you "tossing" it?) different handling entirely w/ fwd or quattro. take a good test drive in TT before you decide, that's the only way you'll be able to tell. Drive both the 180 and 225. If you've been "tossing" your bimmer, you'll figure out what you want pretty quickly.

I'm not flaming you; I just think for the marginal extra cost quattro is the way to go.
