Default OT: I suppose I'm asking for a good lashing, by saying this, but: the new A8 looks like...

the first generation Lexus LS 400. Especially, everything foreward from the B pillar... Someone sent me this pic in response to some completely diff. topic/post, but something about the design caught my eye - something too comfortable and familiar... Am I completely stoned, or is there some truth to this? Maybe a little less rigid and linear, but a feasible evolution towards greater aerodynamics and lower CoD??? Before, you start gathering wood to burn the "heretic ***-munch" (he said wood - hee, hee) just do me a smidgeon of a little favor: cover the Audi emblem on the below pic and ask someone around you to identify the car. Well???

P.S. > I'm not playing style-**** today, just an observation - INTELLIGENT (or funny) comments welcome...

Default I happen to agree with you, at least somewhat, on this one

There are definite styling queues that are similar although the Audi sweeps back considerably better from the nose.

Default Yep, that's what I meant by...

"Maybe a little less rigid and linear, but a feasible evolution towards greater aerodynamics and lower CoD???" My thought is that if Lexus had worked off of it's own styling cues, instead of an M-B design ethic, the design of the new A8 might have been the logical design evolution for the first generation LS 400...

That's why I'm stickin' with my TT - ain't nothing like it!!!

Maybe that's why Peich said Audi is still too conservative

Default The thing that really ties the two together for me is the grill.

The fact that they both ahve the chrome ring around the matte black grill.

Default Yes, I remember Denny's (?) post of last week (?)....

Although, I wonder if for this model and segment (sub ultra-luxury) cars have to be a little "stodgy" and "conservative" to appeal to the client base? Most of the models in this segment (S class, 7 series, LS, Q, Jag, etc.) only come with an auto trans. and a big *** normally-aspirated V8, and cushy suspensions (I know they all offer "sports" models), an absurd number of lux. amenities and such... IMO (my new disclaimer ;-)) comparative advantage seems to boil down to which manufatcurer is quickest to bring a particular gimick to market. Anyone want to guess how long until all of these cars have in-dash rear-view monitors and distance sensitive speed-control??? Perhapsl, Audi feels like it has to provide a comparable product to stay viable???

Remember the Aston Martin Lagonda and the Maserati QuattroPorte??? IMHO - both were examples of uncharacteristic rigid/conservative design by these otherwise innovative manufacturers, to cater to this very crowd...

I guess this is good, as eventually a manufacturer's less profitable models might see a trickle-down of the best technologies implemented in the flagship models. Things like ABS, traction-control, airbags (assbags), etc...

Default That's a first--someone ripping off FROM Lexus! Actually, that A8 is a mock-up. Audi hasn't

released official photos.

That photo is from LLtek's web site--I posted it here about a week ago.
