OT: Digital Video to Tape Question
To print to video to an analog device will require certain hardware (a special card with a rca or bnc or s-video connection and possible memory to cache the images for large files/sequences also digital signal processor/dsp). For DV it goes straight through firewire to your camera.

2) The dsp or dig/an conversion may not be enabled in your camera until recording or playback. That is the question and I would call/contact Canon and specifically ask. (Your VHS can do it because it is not doing a digital conversion such as the cable tv pass through).
This may be an issue with consumer dv cams as opposed to prosumer such as the Canon XL1 and pro cams which usually feature a passthrough so a director or shooter can monitor the signal with a local monitor instead of just a viewfinder at all times (they probably have a couple of chips to handle this).

http://www.canondv.com/pdf/ins_optura.pdf</a
