Default FMIC is finally stealth black! Pics inside....

Got my FMIC back from the anodizing shop.... here it is before I took it in...

And here are three pics after coating it...

Coating isn't perfect, but I didn't expect it to be. Shop warned me that there might be places where the coating wouldn't stick-- white specks you see in pics. Bottom line, they did a fine job of achieving my goal-- make that shiny silver IC black, without impacting heat dissapation qualities. Cost: $135.

Default After discussion with second shop, decided it was a non issue...

in that the coating wasn't going to come off and end up in the engine. Essentially, the metal is now dyed black, so there really isn't a coating to flake... though it could fade over time. I just had them dip the whole part.

Default Then since it was dipped this means it can't chip, correct?

I like how it looks! Why didn't you have it done a shade of dark green to match the car? lol

Default They said it can't flake or chip... I guess its a bit like colored metal...

a couple of the guys were hotrodders, and felt it wouldn't be a problem to coat the inside. If my engine self-destructs, I'll let you know. :-)

Thought about doing desert green, but it was enough hassle getting the damn thing done in black.

Default The FMIC will actually perform better with the dark coating, same as refridgerator coils blacked.

Encyclopedia Britanica:
"The rate at which a body radiates (or absorbs) thermal radiation depends upon the nature of the surface as well. Objects that are good emitters are also good absorbers (Kirchhoff's radiation law). A blackened surface is an excellent emitter as well as an excellent absorber. If the same surface is silvered, it becomes a poor emitter and a poor absorber. "
