Default That damn storm from last night caused the following damge . . .

1 - 15" monitor
1 - 100baseT NIC
1 - APC Back-UPS 500

That was all on my secondary computer!

My primary computer got hosed! It killed 2 partitions and has made my Win98 instal extremely unstable!

I transferred a NIC to my secondary to get back online and will be spending the next 2 days rebuilding ym primary before getting back online completely.

Right after I posted about the storm we had a close lightening strike and the lights went out for a second and my computers went haywire. My secondary computer was already off and I was powereing off the primary. The server was left on, but I lost my cable for a little while as well.

When I turned everything back on this morning my 15" monitor began to smoke like crazy! I had to open a window and grab my little 10" Honeywell fan to direct the smoke outside. That monitor is not sitting outside on my upstairs porch.

I will be calling LIPA to get them to pay for this stuff since I know they have paid for people appliances in the past. They are responsible for power spikes on Long Island Hopefully they don't give me an argument.

Default Is LIPA the power company? If so, you might do better pursuing through APC as they guarantee against

damage to connected equipment. I got reimbursed from the power company here once, but only because they could directly connect my problem (and several others in the area) to work they were doing. If it had been due to lightening, they would not have reimbursed me. ("Act of God, nature," etc........)

I finally shut my computer down here when it kept switching to battery, but forgot that my new firewire drive only is connected via a vanilla surge protector. Hope it's okay .... I'll check it out today. My router was temporarily hosed, but was fine once I shut it down and turned it back on. Quite a storm!

(Think I'll switch to the work computer in the future when things are iffy storm-wise. Less pain (to my pocket) to replace!)

Default it came out of nowhere, I was on the boardwalk when it started...

no warning whatsoever - wind kicked up and within 10 seconds it was a downpour, was soaked head to toe and my car was only parked about 100 yards off the boardwalk. Saw two nearby lightning strikes near us - the first one ended in a huge blue flash at ground level - thought it could have been a substation, probably the one that did the damage to your equipment.

Default I got mine off in time, but saw something on a telephone pole EXPLODE!!!

It was right by the island park trainstation, lightininhit and the whole thing exploded in blue sparkds. It was pretty wild.

Did get to ride the whole Ocean Prky while the sky was blood red and see all the lightining.

I think my date enjhoyed the scene, espically with the top down and warm temps. Unfortunatly whe we got out of the car we got soaked. She was wearing black

On the same topic this is the girl I went out with when my TT got hit. SO if nothing happend to my car last night I think its safe to say she is not bad luck. I told her at the begining that if anything happend to my car on the second date, we are over

Default That sux. Transformer on the pole IN MY YARD blew due to nearby lightning strike last summer

and I only lost 1 modem. Everything else was connected through Tripp Lite UPS's. The UPS's still work. I did send them to TrippLite for evaluation to see if something blew. The small one blew some power conditioning circuitry which they replaced even though it was out of warranty.

I have sworn off APC and sworn by Tripp-Lite for 6 years and counting. I have only lost equipment that I forgot to route through them.

BTW, all computers and many phones in my cul-de-sac were lost in the event.

I don't understand why the power company would pay for replacement equipment due to lightning strike. Did I miss something in your story or are you trying to get away with something?

Default Not trying to get away with anything . . .

I don't know if it was a lightning strike or not. I know we had a black out for a minute, then a few brownouts. They are responsible for the brownouts causing damage to your stuff in your house. They are responsible for the lines.
