NASCAR's first season on Fox has been everything the network could have hoped for and then some.
Ratings for the Winston Cup races grew 18 percent over CBS and ABC last year and even more incredible is the growth the sport gave to Fox's cable entities, Fox Sports Net and FX.
On FSN, every NASCAR program, such as "Victory Lane" and "NASCAR This Morning," improved its time slot 60 to 100 percent over what was there before. FX was virtually unknown before NASCAR came along. Now, seven of the network's highest rated programs of all time are NASCAR-related. FX has added 8 million new homes since the channel added NASCAR.
"From the FX perspective, NASCAR has been nothing short of a spectacular success," said FX president Peter Liguori. "...This sport has become a tremendous, cornerstone addition to FX and we can't wait for next season."
Plans are in the works for Fox to acquire Speedvision by the end of the summer and for that cable channel's NASCAR programming to increase dramatically. In fact, we might not be far away from a total NASCAR network.
"I have always had this belief that NASCAR was the sleeping giant of American sport," said Fox Sports chairman David Hill.

The battle right now is in getting an audience and distribution onto various cable systems. This is why Fox wants to aquire majority stake in Speedvision and convert it into the NASCAR Channel. Without Speedvision, Fox will have to start at square one with finding satellite space and selling the channel to local cable companies.
The one thing going for Speedvision right now is that they FINALLY turned a profit last year. It makes it just a little bit harder for a hostile takeover by Fox.....
