OT: What BrampTTon did all summer (if you are bored at work and into gardening)
- We planted(had planted) 9 new trees to complement the 3 we had done in 1999;
- We had a 20x35 deck installed, then we stained it;
- We started staining the fench;
- We dug out 4000 lbs of grass and clay to put in plant beds;
Take a look at this Photpoint album. If you browse Photpoint using my email address (ianq@home.com), you can see other albums that show the progress.

In any event, root rot has been a big problem in this spot, especially during the winter. Basically, water soaks into the improved top soil layer but can't drain because of the clay underneath or at the edge of improvement. Water collects in these spots and actually results in a white mold around the roots which unfortunately kills or stunts most of what we plant there.
Good Luck!
Inside, I've done quite a few medium projects, including building a wine cellar in the basement, completely ripping out redoing an 8x12 screen porch (including the box frame and floor), completely gutting and redoing a powder room (including the subfloor, but had a plumber do the plumbing and a tiler come in). I'm now in the midst of building a 15 foot solid oak bookcase/bench in the one room which was 'semifinished' when we got here.
A lot of this has been made possible by recent 'indefinate temporary retirement' which began in February, but unfortunately ends next week.

I love projects inside and outside the house - very relaxing.On another funny note, my dad recently sold a business and is now semi-retired so he has a chance to do a lot more work around the house. Our house thanks him

For the plant bedding, we dug 1 foot down.
I know not all will live happily in our clay environment, so far only problem was our generic Canadian Maple isn't growing on one side as well as the other side. Had Davey Tree company in(they take care of all my trees, big company), who at first thought it was root strangulation. However, when digging down, couldn't find any root wrapped around.
My only other issue is my cedars out front had a bad case of Apple Rust.
The Sunkist cedar, which is next to the Dolgo Crabapple, hasn't shown signs of Apple Rust, and the crabapple looks pretty good considering it was only transplanted in May.
Lot's of work ...
