Default What is the technical reason for having caps on the lug bolts?

While I understand that the caps look nice I am not sure why they have caps on them. My theories:
1. Rounded off corners from removing bolt is covered up by cap.
2. Maybe some metalurgy problem that requires bolts to be different material and therefore needs a cap for aesthetic coloration reason.
3. No technical reason at all it is purely a cosemetic solution.

Anyone know the real reasoning?

Default I would guess aerodynamic drag . . .

the caps extend the end of the lug bolts just enough to begin to place them in the air stream.. The caps take up just enough room to not allow any low perssure areas to penetrate into the 5 openings on each wheel. This should stabilize the cars at speed and allow for a greater and more safe top speed.

Ok, if you don't buy that . . . because they look pretty! lol

I think it is to produce the proper airflow for brake cooling. ;-)

So you can hear it when the lug nuts fall off.

So when you run over someone, you don't scratch them with the lug nuts

Default Mostly right, to make the lugs cheaper...

Chrome lugs would be somewhat weaker in use, the chrome would peel and chip in due time.
I painted my caps a nice matching polished wheel color :-)
