Default Cell Antennae removal update

Boy is this one a breeze in comparison to getting the spoiler off. Very straight forward and should not require anything in the way of removing the interior roof trim.

TT Sans Antennae:
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8301/antennae3.jpg">

Here is the diagram from the Bentley CD courtesy of Denny:

<img src="http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1524173&a=13620968&p=52860121">

It goes very much like the diagram. You first uncrew the tip of the antennae. Then using a big set of pliers or robo-grip (big pipe wrench meets pliers tool - a must have) and wiggle the rubber boot off the base of the antennae. Then using a wrench unscrew the thin, brass base bolt and you are basically finished.

The antennae feeder bolt that comes up from underneath the car then just pushes down into gap between the trim and the roof(or in my case fell back into the gap). To reduce rattles, I figure I am going to stuff some foam in the hole to hold down the antennae line/bolt in place. From the pics below you will see that it leaves a hole the width of your index finger.

Took a total of ten minutes.

Next the TT goes in the paint shop during the week of the 27th so I will let everyone know who it looks sans antennae and spoiler.

Default Neat...glad the diagram helped. So silly of Audi to make that standard...how the heck many people

even got the phone? Bet it is less than 5%...

What I was concerned with, was the part that projects through the roof dangling and rattling in your interior....looks like you have a plan for that....can't wait to see your finished work of art... ;-)

Default That would be AoA, and not Audi AG who are silly then....

as TT's elsewhere in the world, eg Australia, do not have that, or any other for that matter, antennae.

So I guess it must be a region/county decision..just like alcantara/leather interiors, underdash service manual holders, two reversing lights verses one reversing/one rear fog, recirc air w/o aircon compressor turned on...etc.etc

Not the mention different bumper configurations, headlights with/without orange indicator bits in them...etc

And there is no way I will mention anything about which side of the cabin the steering wheel is located, lol.

Default no, actually this was AudiAG's decision!

They decided early on in the design that the North American market has zillions of cell phones and everyone would want one as well . . . so they decided to ship EVERY TT with the phone, sort of how every TT came with Bose and Xenon lights type of deal. What AudiAG didn't realize was Analog Cell phones went out with the freakin' hula hoop and everyone was into digital! lol When AoA saw all of the TT's with the analog cell phones, they said to please leave the phone in Germany and make it an option. AudiAG had no choice but to do that as AoA knew nobody would ever use the analog phone, let alone be willing to pay something in the neighborhood of $1000.00 for the stupid thing.

That is why the North American TT's all have analog cell phone antenae's!

Default Ok I stand corrected on that one Larry

Geez, given that Australia has an even higher per capita cell phone useage that the US I am glad that logic was not applied to cars sent here.

At least we got the alcantara/leather option here; it sure helps keep the bum on the seat when cornering hard.

Default It really is Alcantara.

Alcantara base and backrests, leather seat and side bolsters and headreset. I will look to see if I have any decent shots of the seats in mine and post them.

I have the dark grey/charcoal/black interior. The other two colour combinations available here at the time, the blue and the light grey were also available in either full leather or leather/alcantara.

Default Re: Cell Antennae removal update

Would it be possible to wire the antennae for other uses? Say GPS? I understand antennae work best when they are multiples of the wavelength but would there be any problems otherwise?
