Default Video Capture Help!

Ok.. I want to capture some video from our local club drives. Anyone who had done this I would love some advice.

I am not going to go out and buy a hi-8 or digital video cam for this specially, so I am working with a laptop and logitech webcam.

Basically I need info on some nice capture software (would LOVE video AND sound at the same time). Then I need compression info (quicktime or realplayer or windows media)... I don't care which format, just nice quality for the $$ and that will drop my file size down from my 500 Mb avi files (at least that is what I get from WebCam32's AVI capture).

In WebCam32 I have the option of the encoding technique for the AVI that it writes, I have no idea what to choose.. so if the program you reccomend needs the same options, please tell me what you reccomend.

I have some sample videos from WebCam32 from this morning. They came out ok with the webcam pinned between the headrest and the top of the seat on the passenger's side. I am going to try to make a special harness for it that will hang from the passenger's sun visor out of a metal hanger. That should give a better view as the position I had it in was too far back and too low of a perspective (I could only see tops of cars that were close).

HELP!! (Oh, the first drive that I want to do this on is tomorrow.. so instant results!)

Default Get realplayers free encoder

then capture directly to it...be sure to set a small frame size if you want a small file. Good luck

Default I always use Microsoft's Windows Media Encoder.

It's available for free, plays in Media Player 6.5 or higher on both Macs and PCs, can encode at multiple rates (so people on modems can watch, and people with cable can have a high quality video as well) and it will encode your existing AVIs into ASF format.

If you want to just save your AVIs straight from WebCam32, get the DivX codec. It will compress the video pretty well, and give you a nice quality video at a decent filesize. You can find the DivX codec at www.divx.com If anyone wants to watch a video that you encode with DivX, they will have to have the DivX codec loaded on their computer.

Default Update and thanks!

Thanks for the input. Earlier today I put WME on the laptop and did a test. Came out great! Audio was decent (for the laptop mic) and video was pretty good and compression was even better.

Only problem is that is seems like most people can't see the video (WMP says it can't download the codec). Any help on this?

Here is the video:

http://www.scvtt.com/movies/test.wmv</a

Default It looks like you used the Windows Media 8 codecs...

...Which a lot of people don't have yet. I think they might still be in beta right now, so MS doesn't have them in a place where Media Player will find them. I haven't actually tried using Media Tools 8 yet, so I'm not sure what you can/can't do with it. If it's possible to select which codec to use, you should probably use MPEG Layer3 for the audio codec and MS MPEG 4 for the video codec. These two will give you pretty good compatibility since Media Player can download these codecs. I have a bunch of videos encoded this way up at http://laer.nu/autocross if you want to see what they look like.

Default Well.. I don't think so...

See, I got the WME 7 which I am assuming has the 7 codecs.. I made sure I didn't get 8. BUT most of the people I have sent it to have WMP 6 and when it tries to get the codec for 7 it just dies. I'll do some of my own testing and see how it goes. Thanks a bunch!
