Its a small freaking world.... a long but cool story........
Anyway, I spent almost 30 minutes talking about my favorite subject (My TT) and generally swapped some stories etc ( My installer has a mini-truck that is on the cover of Mini-Truckin' this month)....anyway, I finally said thanks and goodbye and make my way out to the car.
As I walk towards the car, I see an older man in a dress shirt/tie with a big smile on his face staring at my car and holding a 7-11 Big Gulp. He asks me if this is my car and I said *yeah*, he complimented me and began to tell me that he is an Audi/VW enthusiasts and he has a B5 Passat, his auto-x car (which he was driving) was an 1990 Jetta GLI that was setup for auto-x and his son is into VW's and has a VR6 GTI and he is a moderator on the VWVortex.com forums....and I know who his son is by his user name.
Wow, what a small world eh? I told him my old user name on the Vortex was VR6 CABBY (for my old car) and he knew the name so we started talking about more stuff.... =)
He asked me how I went from the VW thing to the Audi and I proceeded to tell him the story of how I ended up with my car...coming from the Cabrio.
I had a very nice offer to sell my Cabrio to a friend of mine which put me in the market for a car....and I really wasn't sure what I wanted but it wasn't going to be easy =)
I saw a few Audi TT Coupes that were used and in my price range (or at least whatever I could talk the wife into =) ) and I thought I might like to see what they are like, I had always liked them since the first time I saw the TT at the dealer, I just never looked at it like it was something I would be owning anytime soon....I admired it and walked away....
Instead of calling each person that is selling their TT and arrange a test drive/inspection, I would go to the dealer and test drive the Coupe and see if I like it (remember I have never owned a hardtop car... 1988,89,90 Cabriolets and a 1995,98 Cabrio is what I have owned) so I dropped by my local dealer and looked for a Coupe. I walked around on the lot and I saw a Lake Silver 225TTRQ with a price of around $46,700 and I stepped back like WHOAH! A salesman asked if he could help me and I told him that I was looking to see if he had any Coupes because I might be interested in one, to which he replied that he only had this one 225TTRQ and that it was sold, but the guy who bought it was trading in the identical color combo but it is a 180FronTrak....I said keep talking =), he told me that it had around 3K miles on it and the guy originally wanted the 225 but they could not find one in the color he wanted so he *settled* for the 180 for his wife... I asked the salesman how much the car would be going for and he told me that he wasn't sure. He told me that the car would be inspected and cleaned up and be on the lot the next day and he would be able to tell me what the $$ was going to be, I told him to call me and let me know it was ready and that I would come out and take a look at it.
The next afternoon my salesman called me and told me that the car was ready to be looked at but he was still not sure on the pricing...no matter, I wanted to drive it regardless =)
I called my wife and told her I was going to the Audi dealer and test driving a TT .....(she was pissed cause she has been wanting an A4 for a while and now all of the sudden I wanted a TT =) anyway.. I went and test drove the car and before I even got off the lot with this car, I knew I wanted it.....convertible, stylish as hell and has the potential to be a screamer with the aftermarket that is ahead for the 1.8T motor.
I made sure to stop by my house and pick up the check book (just in case) and let the salesman know I just might be serious (since I still get carded for cigarettes and I look a little young)
We got back to the dealer and the inevitable came....the price, I asked him and he told me that he would have to talk to his boss on any deal on the car since they were in such demand at the time (Aug 31st 2000) and he told me that the price was $35,700 (1K under MSRP) and I kind of chuckled.... =) So I walked in to his office and we talked a little and I told him that I it was a little out of my price range at $35K and that I would have to think about it, of course he then asks what I can afford...I told him that I wanted it for 33K on the road (taxes, title etc) to which he laughed....=) I seriously wrote out a check for 2K dollars and told him to call my cel phone and tell me to come pick up my new car or my newly voided check...
I get a call about 8:30 (1/2 before they close) and I end up buyng the car at my deal... helps to have cash and the date being Aug 31st =)
So how is this story crazy or a small freakin world?
midway through my TT buying experience speech the guy I told you about and interupts me and says that this TT used to belong to his best friends wife that he auto-x's with and works at the same hospital that he does....LOL!
Everything that my salesman told me about checked out as far as the reasons the car was back as a trade in etc and it was kinda cool, I gave the guy my email address and told him to have the guy email me and I will send him pics if his wifes ole' car =)
Pretty weird huh?
