How to remove interior mirror?

Does anyone can give me a clue how to remove/detach the interior mirror? I don't want to go into the risk of breaking the window glass by applying a wrench to it and thrust the connecting piece between mirror & window out; I only want to remove the mirror case & mirror glass itself (I want to paint it (the case, not the glass

), so the plastic part connecting the mirror to the window may stay where it is...any hints?

The shank column twists off of the imbedded metal post....don't think mirror comes off separately.

stick a small philips head screwdriver...

or other small round stiff tool in the hole of the base. The hole is on the underside of the base, real close to the window. Use the screwdriver to get leverage to rotate the base parallel to the window. DON'T pull the screwdriver towards you, the windshield will BREAK! The base has to rotate on the windshield about 45 degrees to pop from the clip (which is glued to the windshield). Try it by hand, first to see how it twists...after doing it once sucessfully, it is easy to see how it works.
