BODY:
German coachbuilder Karmann is considering the launch of its own marque 30 years after the demise of the Karmann Ghia, the last model to carry the firm's name.
According to the Welt am Sonntag newspaper due out Sunday, the company is looking for a suitable manufacturer who could slot the model into its range, Karmann boss Rainer Thie me told the paper. Karmann, which makes the bodywork for a number of production cars such as the Audi A4 and Mercedes CLK convertibles, would need to rely on the dealership network of a partner firm since it has no distribution network of its own.
The company recently presented the Transformer concept car, a blend of offroader and cabriolet. Karmann employs around 6,000 people and sold 54,000 vehicles last year. The Karmann Ghia, based on VW mechanicals, was built from 1955 to 1974 in coupe and drophead versions. A total of 440,000 were sold. dpa cd mb ba
