Take the ferry from Windermere across the lake, walk the 1/2 mile to
the bus stop and take the bus to Old Sawrey. Visit the former home of Beatice Potter (of Peter Rabbit fame). Old Sawrey is the most enchanting village. You can also ride the bus to other towns in the district.
There is tons more to see in the Lake District - you will love it, it is one of my wife's and mine favorite places in the world.

Take an umbrella :-) It has the highest annual rainfall of anywhere in the UK....
Seriously though, it's quite beautiful. My Dad was born & grew up there.
