I had them change the oil at 3000 mi. Instead of the usual 5000. Call me ****. I had a bit of a list of stuff to fix. Anybody else have a problem with leaky windows and misc. annoying rattles..??

The break-in oil is *supposed* to stay in until at least 5K. I'm surprised they actually changed it for you. The rear shelf is the main rattle culprit. I had mine replaced and now the car is rattle free! Just need to the DV replaced and get that annoying cat out of my radio now! doh! (most of you know what I'm talking about....)

Default I changed my at 1k and every 3k thereafter, so I can't criticize you.

Water leaks on a coupe, though? Ouch! My Roadster is watertight. I'd be screamin if I was you.

Not good. The first oil needs to stay in for about 5,000 mi for proper engine break in.

Default I don't think so!

The first 1000 miles of engine break-in introduces the highest level of metal debris. Why would I want that to stay in for 4000 extra miles? To help bed in my bearings?

Who sold you guys the 5000 mile oil bit? Is it made from special 5000 mile dinosaurs?

As long as the oil is replaced with synthetic or semi-synthetic, it's good to change it early. With thirtteen years of building European engines, you're going to have to work hard to convince me that everything I've learned is wrong.

Default Huh?

So your telling me the engine is *completely* broken in at the 1K mark? And then to put synthetic in? Bad idea imo. The rings etc. never get a chance to seat (sp), *especially* w/synthetic. Audi/VW puts "break-in" oil in for a reason. Do you really think the "metal debris" is going to get embedded in the bearings in >5K? If this was the case, everyone who followed the 5K service schedule would have excessive bearing wear eventually followed by failure. Just my .02

Default I'm open to someone showing me (in the owner's manual) that you can cause damage

by changing your oil TOO soon.

Without revealing too much about who I work for, you'll have to understand that we've torn down "control" engines at various stages in their lives with "X" miles and similar operating conditions etc. And I can guarantee that the engine sees it hardest time in life during the first 1000 miles. Rings are (exagerated for effect) gouging their way into fresh piston walls. (again exagerated)Tight bearings are being wallowed out by piston rods and crankshafts.

The babbit and metal contents of oil during the "break-in" period are extremely high. Removal of the contaminated oil (and filter) at that early point is beneficial. Who is it that convinced you it was detrimental?

Not looking to fight, just hoping to offer up some facts in the face of some very contradictary statements.

I agree with you 100 %. My brother works for BMW and he states the same facts as you.
