Default Awesome speech last night, but one thing stuck out in my mind...

more than once now, the media has asked about Nuclear weapons being used in this war. Every time, the media has been shot down with the "we can't comment on that" kind of response.

However, as far back as I can remember, any time the media asked this in previous conflicts (Kosovo, Iraq, etc), the military was very quick to deny the use of nuclear weaponry. This is the first time that I can remember that they seem to have not ruled out the possibility. Bush made a mention in his speech about what will be done to fight the war. Here's the snippet:

------------------------------------------------
Americans are asking: How will we fight and win this war? We will direct every resource at our command -- every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence, and every necessary weapon of war -- to the disruption and to the defeat of the global terror network.
------------------------------------------------

What do you all think? Personally, I am not opposed to nuclear weaponry when it is necessary, however, I think we'd create a lot more problems using them in that location of the world (Russia would be pissed, China would kick our ***, etc). I guess it could be as simple as them not wanting to rule anything out as a just-in-case thing, but it still kind of troubles me..

Default Re: there's more nuclear delivery systems than just a MIRV'd ICBM or cruise missile..

a small nuke can be fired from standard artillery.. localizing the destruction. But then with the full arsenal available to the US, the real core problem comes down to identifying and locating a target for the military to focus upon. The weapons used is really moot.

The use of atomic weapons is not wise, do we want to open a door that can swing both ways?

Default Actually....

I think the military's policy is to never say one way or the other if they plan to use any weaponry -- nuclear or not. Can you specifically point to a source where the military did so in previous conflicts, or are you just going on memory here? Just asking out of my own curiousity....

Default Going on memory (more)

I remember when Desert Storm started one of the pentagon people was being interviewed, and he strongly denied any thoughts on using nuclear weapons.. Can't remember who it was though, unfortunately.

My thoughts exactly. We aren't the only ones with nukes..
