<b> I don't know how it is for the rest of the world but, in the States, there's probably no bigger 'chick car' than VW's Golf Cabrio (except maybe the Beetle). So what does this say about the male owner of the the MK3 Cabby in this story?
Before you solidify any assumptions, let me say that Sean Conner, owner of this Jazz blue stunner is a dead-ringer for MTV's Carson Daly and is therefore sleeping with Tara Reid and your not (It's an American thing, were not really supposed to understand~Ed).
Now that those doubt's have been addressed, lets look at what would make such manly man subject his masculinity to whispers and snickering by bravely choosing a girlie car to modify. Well you have got eyes and our Max is a top notch photographer, so the answer is obvious.
I doubt there is a guy out there who wouldn't gladly drive this Cabrio on a daily basis. Still not sure? Well let me break it down for you.
Sean Conner's Cabby started as personal transport for 1552 Design co-owner Brad Beardow. Brad converted the '98 Cabrio to VR6 running gear and drove it for a few months. When Sean heard the car was for sale, he pleaded with his fiance, Kristie, to let him buy it probably naively thinking that she'd get to drive it too, so she agreed.
Sean didn't change a whole lot since he already like the car the way it was. With the purchase, he inherited the complete, low mile VR6 swap (motor, tranny and brakes), Abt coilovers, Techtonics/Remus exhaust, blue Hella taillights and color coded dash pieces.
To this collection, Sean added 8x18" Kinesis wheels with colour coded centres. These rims were then wrapped in 225/35 Pirelli P-Zeros, the combination is simply stunning. The inner arches were trimmed away to clear and the outer edges covered with smoothed and painted GTI flares.
The finishing exterior touches consist of smokey P'Zwo double rounds, Bonrath badgeless grill and colour-coded splitters under the air dam.
The basically stock engine bay did not stay that way for very long. Sean added a custom-ported intake manifold, ITG filter and Blue Ignitor plug wires, and carbon fiber engine cover but that just wasn't enough.
He wanted to be able to do more than just pimp his Cabby, he wanted to totally stomp anybody who still believes in the chick car thing. A quick phonecall to 1552 Design, a big dent in his Visa Card and just a few hours labour gave the ability to shut 'em up-over 250bhp courtesy of a Z-Engineering centrifugal supercharger kit.
Sean drove his car 1000 miles each way just to attend this shoot (he lives in MD) and admitted he had quite a bit of fun along the way. How could you not have fun while humiliating Mustangs, M3's and Mercedes in your bright blue girlie-car?
Now all this talk about a 'girls car' is purely for fun, the idea that one kind of VW is inherently better suited to one sex is silly. Sean owns a killer MK3 Golf which has the extra versatility of a convertible hood. What's so girlie about that?
At this point an epilogue is in order since quite a bit has changed with the car since the photos were taken.
Sean sold his Cabrio back to Brad at 1552 Designs (who then turned around and sold it again). Sean now owns an Audi TT Roadster, which should appear in these pages in the near future.
