I got this picture from RoberTTo. I want to paint my engine cover that red, and also the bar. I believe the bar has to be high temp paint. does the engine cover also need to be high temp? Do I need to scuff up the bar to paint it? I am thinking either red, orange or yellow- most likly red, since my breaks are red, and I am thinking about doing the leather inserts in the seats red. (of course burnt orange would look real nice I think.

Default plastic surfaces that flex may not be good to paint.....

The bar I'm sure most enamels would be fine for but I would avoid painting the plastic cover. If you did there is a flex additive used such as for painting the plastic bumpers that may help. As the plastic heats it may bend or expand so the paint would need to flex at the same rate. Best stuff is pigmented when molded.

my bar is red-- no scuffing required maybe2-3 coats.

you don't need hi-temp, clean the bar, don't need to sand it, maybe coat it with a clear enamel also

Default A good auto parts store will have vinyl paint, that's used for trim...

Also, you may want to find a flat finish color.
Actually, any good quality spray paint will work on the plastic, just don't use a gloss enamel.

as jeff said maybe a light coat of a spray may be ok...not thick though may work.

Default That's too funny, Tom.

I bought the paint, primer, clearcoat, and 'automotive scuffing pad' about a month ago to do this same thing.

I started on it tonight. The bolts that hold the bar are 13mm. I washed the bar and cover in the shower with Dawn dishwashing liquid, then used the scuff pad.
Next, 2 light coats of primer, then 2 coats upper, 2 coats lower on the bar of yellow paint. Finally, 2 coats upper, 2 coats lower of clear.

On the engine cover, I did something a little different than Roberto. It was inspired by Boki, the guy who owns the yellow S4 you can see reflected in my car in my signature.

Anyway, I masked off everything but 5V, Turbo, and, the ring around that part of the cover. I also left the lowest part of the hole that goes around the oil cap unmasked.

As of right now, I still need to do the underside of the bar with 2 coats of paint, then wait, then the clearcoat. I also still need to clearcoat the cover. BTW, I used primer first on the cover and recommend that you do the same.
