Default Slightly OT: re photoshop:

How to perform an effect on part of an image(say the background behind the car in my sig pic) without affecting the car...or how would I select the car and move the car onto a different background...??
Do you have to use layers to do this??
Thanks for any help with this

Default Once you select your vehicle or the background

(you can do either and Invert) using the Lasso Tool or the Magic Wand, go to the Select menu and choose 'Save Selection'. This will create a New Layer with the selection.

Work from there...

Default Paging Nancy...

You can use the selection tools (lasso, magnetic lasso, magic wand etc.) to separate the car from the backround (just draw the "marching ants" line along the outer lines of the car). This can sometimes be a bit tedious depending on the image but after completing this you can apply effects to the selected part only. You can also inverse the selection by pressing shift-ctrl-I. Ctrl-C copies the selection to clipboard and ctrl-V creates a new layer and pastes the selection on it. If you want to use this selection in another image, just open the second file and press paste (or ctrl-v) when the image is activated. A new layer is automatically created and you can then move or edit your selection freely on that layer.

Using layers gives you a lot more possibilities and artistic freedom for complex effects but simple lasso selection should be enough for basic effects such as blurring the backround etc.

I'm sure Nancy can give you a lot more precise and practical instructions how to do this the easiest way. I'm afraid Photoshop is not the most user-friendly program to work with ;-)

Default Also, to make better selections, hitting CapsLock will turn your cursor into a crosshair.

Also, if you use a Mac and not a PC, substitute the Command key for Petri's recommended CTRL key.
