Default Tire pressure

OK...would everyone who checks their tire pressure at least once a month, please raise their hand.
I thought so.

Default Daily...on the C5 "Driver Information Center" display.

Acronym is "DIC". It's fairly small, but not hard to read. When asked why it wasn't bigger, Chevy engineer reportedly said that if you have a Corvette, you don't need a big DIC!

BTW, C5 has run-flat tires, so remote pressure monitoring is about the only way you know if tire is low or loses air. No spare and no jack to worry about.

TT gets checked far less often, unfortunately.

Default remarks on run-flat tires:

I'm in favor of the concept (and prices seem to be coming down nowadays), but they aren't necessarily a total replacement for a spare - if your tire gets sidewall damage or is punctured in some other severe way, you may not want to continue driving on it at all. in this case, not having a spare means you're up the creek... on the other hand, it does probably address the most common flat tire cases. life's a gamble, anyway, nobody can tell what will happen next... :-)

a question: on the C5, is there some tire-lifetime limit of run-flat miles? (i.e., you get a flat, drive home for X miles, repair tire, now do they suggest you not do it again with that tire, or only do it for something-X miles, ...?) or are they assuming you'll replace the tire anyway, so it's not an issue? just curious what they claim.

Default Some answers...

"If you drive on a deflated EMT (Extended Mobility tire or "run-flat") for 50 miles (80 km) or less at speeds of 55 mph (90 km/h)or less, there is a good chance the tire can be repaired. The tire can operate effectively with no air pressure for up to 200 miles (320 km) at speeds up to 55 mph, but the tire would then have to be replaced." quoted from Covette owner's manual.

The sidewalls are so strong that it would be difficult to damage them in a way you couldn't drive on them. Even a big gash wouldn't preclude driving. In the case of sidewall damage, you'd have to replace the tire anyway, so 200 miles is ok. Mounting them is a challenge; not every tire dealer is qualified or willing to do it.

My experience with a big (non-repairable) tread puncture (almost 1 inch long) was great (although expensive!) I had no idea tire was flat in normal driving conditions.

Bottom line is if I had a tire go down 200 miles from civilization (in the middle of Utah), I'd take it to bracketracer in SLC rather than be stuck on the road.
