Default I could have "bought the farm" tonight...

I'm driving south on I-5 at about 70 mph in the #2 lane with a large truck in front of me, so I can't see around it. The sun is down and it is dark.

The truck casually signals for a lane change, and as he enters the #3 lane, I see a old Toyota (I think) STOPPED in the #2 lane directly in front of me. His lights are off, but the hazards are on. There was no way in the world I could have stopped without plowing into the rear of the Toyota.

I swerved HARD into the #1 lane, then got on the gas to keep the rear from coming around. I didn't know for sure that the #1 lane was clear, but I knew the #3 wasn't and I had no other options at that point.

My date and I just looked at each other knowing that we'd dodged a major bullet. Had I not been driving a sports car, I'm not sure that I could have maintained control after such an abrupt, high-speed move.

Default Too real. I remember on the 118 a family stood behind their stalled van.. behind them a semi

changes out of their lane and the car behind doesn't. The family scattered as the car hit the van, and the pileup started. Missed it by seconds and felt more mortal for days.

That's just the kind of maneuver they teach at the quattro driver training.

Default Doubtful...

Think my FF team got you tonight, but hard to say for sure as the Yahoo scoring is screwed up.

Victory would have been a lot less sweet if I was dead, which very realistically could have happened had I plowed into a stopped car at 70 mph.

Default Yep, just did the challenge and that might very well have helped...

My reactions were purely instinctive. Had I hesitated another second, I would have rear-ended a stalled vehicle at over 70 mph. Damn lucky also that the #1 lane was clear. Still, I'd like my chances of sideswiping a car in the #1 lane versus plowing into the stopped car.
