Default Ok guys, how do I get back to the 12V wires of the cigarette lighter?

I have decided to go ahead and cut the cigarette lighter wires for my XM radio. How do I get back there without removing the whole friggin' dash? Thanks.

The ashtray comes out with just one screw at the top. Then pull out and down.

Default Why do that? It's the easiest thing in the world to remove the valence under the steerin wheel...

....then you have direct access to the auxiliary wiring harness. You can access lugs for both switched and unswitched 12V power. It's the best way.

Default The hex screw? I saw that but it didn't look like it'd remove the whole unit.

I'll try when I get home. Thanks a bunch!

With ashtray out, you can remove lighter assembly (un-clip it) for easier access to wires.

Default You mean with the whole tray unit out, or just with the actual tray out?

I slid the tray out, but not the actual piece of plastic that holds the tray. I can see the wires barely, but can't get to them. I'l going to try taking off that screw later when I get home.

With screw removed and unit hanging... un-clip lighter. You'll figure it out.

Default Sweet, thanks. BTW, is there enough slack to fit large wire strippers in there?

If there's a couple of inches of extra wire in there, I should be able to fit my bulky wire strippers/cutters in there. Otherwise, I may have to borrow a smaller pair.

Default Not a lot, but I made due...

wire from entry point to lighter is about 6-8 inches long. With lighter unattached from socket, your large size wire stripper will work. Get a viper clip from Radio Shack on your way home to make the connection - much easier!

Good luck
