Default I don't understand. I believe your tire is rated at max load of ...

1235 lbs @ 35 psi. vs 1323 lbs @ 35 for a 225/45-17. You are well within safe load limits @ 33-35 front. (3600 lbs. x 60% front /2 = 1080 per tire)

You realize, I'm sure, that with the shorter sidewall on the 40's, they are stiffer and transmit more impact loads (potholes, etc) to the wheel rim than do the 45's at a given pressure. 40 psi on the street with 225/40's is almost sure to bend wheel rims.

At 40/38, you'll probably wear out the centers quicker than the shoulders. I'll bet the ride is a tad harsh too.

For auto-x (on winter tires?), 40/38 sounds close. IMO, the higher pressures Audi recommends for 225/45's (33/30) would be good for the street.

My $.02, but hey, it's your car.

Default Jon: Ive found in my experience that 40/36 on 40 18s is optimal...I think the stock

psi spec a few psi lower although creating fractionally better traction does allow a greater possibility of rim damage. THe only advantage I think for higher psi is better turn in and decreased possiblity of rim damage. However at a higher psi although initial turn in is improved traction does begin to suffer

Default Thanks, BuLLit. Is the ride harsh? Of course, with BB, you are going so much faster than...

any other color you'd not notice.

BB rules!

Default Well my shocks are dead....so I would recommend frequent visits to the Dentist to

have your teeth glued back in...Tires are very worn and they make more noise than a 4x4 with mudders..no joke... but grip in the dry such that the shocks will allow is great...I really think that a 38psi rear is asking for alittle rear snapping action...I tried higher pressures and didnt like the cars unpredictability on very tight bends especially over rough pavement...36 works great.

Default max is 44/45 lbs - My ride was bouncy and crappy at 34/34

that they were delkivered with from Tirerack.
going to 40/38 results in a MUCH improved ride - just nice and firm. My buddies 996 turbo runs 40/44 on 18's of course the rears are 295's
