OT: Regarding moderation and locking threads
I've posted here before regarding my day job which involves online communities. Currently, my team is doing analysis of technical USENET newsgroups and we are debating the pros and cons of moderation, locking and out and out deleteing of posts within the public newsgroup space. I'd like to hear your thoughts regarding this topic. IMO, it's a basic issue of freedom of speech and whether or not the users are willing to give up some of that freedom in order to stay on topic.

forums can easily get abused without moderation...
I think we can usually trust the good judgment of the moderators. Without them things would easily get out of hand. I think that freedom of speech ends when it starts being an annoyance for others.
