Default OT: I screwed my new laptop up bigtime

I just got my new Dell Inspiron 8100 today. I am always surprised how much crap comes pre loaded. So I deleted the existing partions and selected NTFS (that was the problem). I installed XP pro rather then XP home that came on the machine. When I booted the machine for the first time it came up as a dual boot, home and pro...Now what do I do? I deleted those partions as well and I am now reinstalling pro with fat32...IS this going to work...any help would be great!!!

Default Yes... when you boot off the cd

for XP Pro it will show you the partition config... what you should do is just delete any and all partitions that are there and made the drive one large partition using FAT (FAT32) as the file system.

Default inside...

If you have one partition with both operating systems, just delete the line in boot.ini and the operating system directory you dont want...

Default Solution: install Win2000 and forget XP!

Have an 8100 as well and 2000 is rock solid on it. I run Adobe Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver and a host of other applications simultaneously every day and not a single crash in over 2 months of use.

Default First of all, you haven't screwed anything up.

Second, there's no way you deleted the original OS partition if you ended up witha dual boot. To install XP properly, you need to do it with a boot-up install, not putting the CD in the drive while you have the other OS running and then executing the upgrade. I have XP running on an Inspiron 8000 and it's wonderful. Way better than Win2K IMO and worth the time to do properly.

Default XP deals with laptop stuff like power management way better than W2K.

I just switched to XP Pro and I like it way better.

Default I like it better because it's way better at managing a laptop. The power management is way better..

...and works properly. I always had issues with W2K and it's power management. It's got lots of built-in goodies too for multimedia, etc. I installed it on my kids computer and it also appears to be way more compatible and stable for games.
