Default Holy Cow! The 911 Turbo is a rip-off ... seriously!!

I just ran across some Merrill Lynch equity research on porsche and they list porsche's EBITDA margins per vehicle line. For the non-financially oriented, EBITDA is the cash profit before depreciation of manufacturing equipment and the payment of interest and taxes. These margins are FAT for the industry overall:

Boxster: 16%
Boxster S: 23%
Base 911: 18%
C4S: 24%
C4 Cab: 28%
911 Turbo: 45% !!!!!
GT2: 50%

The 911 Turbo accounts for 30% of Porsche's total EBITDA. These guys are brilliant. They could buy a TT with the profit they make on each one sold and have change for a Kia.

What's a base 911 cost vs. a turbo? With the above figures we can easily figure out how much extra it costs to make the turbo vs. what they charge.

I just sent it to one of my colleagues here, he's picking up his 02' Turbo today.

Default Wow. You could buy a 911, put the turbo in that you wanted,

save on the interest you would have paid on the additional loan, and plan on saving the rest of the money you would have paid in a CD or MM to cover any warranty work that the aftermarket tuner won't.

Diversity investment for their SUV, then maybe a pickup, hopefully a bulldozer some day.

Default it's also interesting that given the poor economy, 911 sales are increasing while boxster sales...

are declining. i guess this indicates that those with significant wealth still buy cars, and there are probably some incentives to move even 911s while the people who buy boxsters tend to not be "sustainably wealthy" and can't afford to purchase in a sluggish economy.

Default That probably has more to do with the age of the current boxster body style.

6 years is an eternity in the auto market these days, even if you are porsche.
