Default OT Another opportunity to relax sucked dry by computers

I took the day off since Ali had a minor procedure this morning and somebody has to watch the babysitter.

She's fine, BTW. Ali. Not the babysitter.

I had the residential gateway (XP'ers may know whut I mean) working between the XP box that is connected to the internet and the rest of the network, including the wireless laptop. The other day Ali called me at work for support: no internet on laptop.

Since the babysitter is here I figured I could catch up on some lesser priority chores, like fixing this.

I have been sitting here on and off since 2 and it ain't working yet. It did work at one point.

I really would have like to do some other low priority shiznit like washing my car but nooooo, my afternoon was sucked into the black hole of computerdom.

Am I killing myself because I am trying to do software internet connection sharing which just sucks? Would a $199 investment in one of those nifty Linksys wires/wirelss router firewall thingy's that I just plug my DSL into directly save me all of these headaches? Since Windows ME it seems I am always screwing around with ICS/Residential gateway issues.

AAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!

Default It would seem it was ZoneAlarm. Why didn't it ask me if such and such app would like

to connect to the internet to allow or not.

Quick, call a monster, I am gonna screaaaaaaam.

Default Ivan, ZoneAlarm installs a file in your Windows registry that is incompatible w/ @Home...

connected machines. I had to get instructions from ZoneAlarm's tech people to properly uninstall the file before I could reconnect.

Don't know if your problem is similar but I thought you could use the info.

Default My experience with ICS was ugly, finally got it working, only to discover....

that it didn't support IPSEC, so my work-from-home VPN connection was unusable. Linksys 4-port router is a no-brainer imho. Piece of cake to setup & configure, and like my TT, totally reliable:-) (Note obligatory TT content).

Default Interesting ... not sure I understand

when our DSL was down (8 weeks due to vendor death) I used an old laptop (gasp!) to dial up to our mindspring account, and then had that machine (running XP Pro) run ICS and firewall - it plugged into the hub instead of my linksys (since ICS wants to do DHCP)

Slow but all the machines in the house could at least do email. Never had any trouble... hmm - be sure the 1/2doz plus bug fixes are applied to XP?

BTW the linksys is also great- now that the DSL modem is back up, the linksys is in duty again.
The newest firmware for the linksys will now work with zonealarm and do some nice firewall work right up front as well...

Default Curious!! see my above post

I ran ZoneAlarm on my XP gateway box after a bit - turned off the builtin firewall since I was running external scans and seeing the machine - and everything worked just fine

The version of ZoneAlarm I have asked if the node being configured was an ICS gateway and I said yes - no worries after that..
