I went to see "Amelie" friday night, gee, what an awesome movie. Movies are not what the French make the best ;-), but that one is fantastic. A must-see IMHO.
I was so emotional after seeing it that I rented Jurassic Park III. *phew* that made me feel better.

What ? The french have made spectacular movies in the past...!
I took a French cinema class in college and it opened my mind to a whole new world of quality and symbolism that can't be found in american films.
Some other movies that are a must see:
Jules et Jim
Le Septième ciel (seventh heaven)
Au Revoir Les Enfant
La Regle du Jeu (Rules of the Game) - 1939
A Bout de souffle (Breathless) - 1960
L'histoire d'Adele H
City of the Lost Children
Outremer (Overseas)
There are more films to see. Let me know if you're intrested and I can post another list.

I know, but it's not what we're famous for ;-)
Also take any of Luc Besson's movies (favorite is The Big Blue). But most people in the US are not exposed to them - and when there is a "good" French movie more often than not there is just an American remake (the Birdcage, True Lies, Three Men And A Baby...).
I can't think of another French movie that was brought over here, not even dubbed and yet successful.
