Default OT: help with identifying early version of Windows

cover of manual just says "Microsoft Windows", no version # . . . back cover has interesting baby hologram . . and inexplicably, wonderfully, the manual is still shrink-wrapped. The 5-1/4" disks may not go woth the manual.... thought maybe the hologram would date it . . . sometimes I think I might be sitting on a gold mine ....anybody familiar with Microsoft's numbering system?

Probably 1.0, if it's 5.25, and no 3.5"'s

Default OK, I recall that 3.0 came on 5.25's. I had a Zenith Data Systems 486SX25

that I had to mail in a card for the 3.5" media since they cut over to 3.5" drives in mid production.

I do have a copy of Windows 3.1 here on 3.5" DSHD so it has to be earlier than that. This version IS NOT 3.11 For Workgroups.

2.x was released to the public as well.

Default Could be 1.0 or the rare Windows/286. Some Windows history links...

Windows History or Schade's Best of Internet have some interesting historical notes.

There are loads of bulletin boards where people are looking for early Windows/DOS disks. Can't remember much money changing hands though. Might buy you some stem caps, who knows? ;-)

Default Based on Roquett's link you definitiely have MS-DOS 1.1 there.

I officially stand corrected on my statements of a few days ago and turn green in envy.

That's quite a rare thing you have there, bucko.

Enjoy!

Default The baby hologram does not belong with those disks. That's like Win 95 OSR2 or so hologram

Microsoft didn't introduce Product IDs like that until Windows 95 OSR2. WIth just Win 95 it was a 10 digit key that you could type all 1's in and it would take.

Those disks are most likely Windows/286, or close to it. Windows/386 was quite prominent on all the disks (I had a version up until a year or two ago) but Windows/286 just said Windows on them.

Default yeh, ah well, so much for the manual's value . . . until much later.

and yeh, the disks were for a Sperry IT 286, 6 Mhz machine. Think they're worth anything?

Default great link, thanks - well, then I'll just keep them disks real safe.

I also found an early edition of Flight Simulator for DOS - got the right book and all the original packaging . . . Hey, I really like the idea of discovering a really valuable piece of stuff in my stuff that I'd be willing to part with for a large sum of money as much as the next guy, ya know? BTW, car is still squeek free.

Default Disks: Windows 1.0x, manual: Windows 3.11 OEM

The disks don't have a version number and have the old (Blibbet-bearing) logo, thus being floppies for MS Windows 1.0 (not sure which sub-release though).

The manual is for Windows 3.11, which was the first Windows to have a Certificate of Authenticity (Win95's looked much different, and Windows 3.1 didn't have one).

Working Windows 1.0 floppies might be worth something -- though they could have easily demagnetized by now and thus become unreadable.
