Is there any difference between the oil filter sold by the dealer parts department and the Fram I can buy at the nearby auto parts store? I have not actually priced the filter at the dealer, but I would be surprised if it was not a lot more than the Fram.

 

For starters I would avoid the Fram double filter type which has micro dispersed PTFE...Theres never been any documented evidence that a thermoplastic imporoves engine longevity..plus PTFE sludges after time (similar to a wax degrading effect) The problem with the oem filters is this...its is 100% likely that it is subcontracted out and built under loose specifications...as to who actually builds it im not sure. I have seen filtration specs on basic fram filters and the size in micron that they effectively filter down to...Its not to impressive, plus theres also the pressure burst test.. Price is also no guarantee of filter quality as high end filters do not necessarily equate with high end performance. Theres a really cool independent link on filters and filtration and burst specs...Ill see if I can dig it up and post it...If I was to use an aftermarket filter I would probably use something Japaneese with the correct filter specs, as Japaneese auto parts generally are built under higher quality control specs than those from north america..or maybe even Mobil 1 filters...but keep in mind that Mobil doesnt make their own filters as well (might be a Fram product as well) The dealer filters are probably a pretty safe bet...THats what I use...Keep in mind that if you use an aftermarket air filter you will need to change oil filter more often as high loads of dirt become emulsified in the oil. i pay 9$ canadian for dealer filters...or you can buy 6 packs of them even cheaper...
