Default I am getting my first electric guitar, a Gretsch 6120-60,

and I would really appreciate some advice about an amp. I have been playing acoustic guitar for over 30 years and know virtually nothing about amplifiers. Are tube amps really that good?
How much wattage is really necessary for playing mostly at home?
Thank you for any help.

Default 30 watts is enough

I live in an apartment and play with a 30 watt Marshall, which is plenty--rarely do I turn it up past 2 or 3 notches. I played a few non-paying gigs in college with some buddies and had to crank it up sometimes to play over the drums but it is usually enough.

Default you need reverb and you need tubes to make this thing sound as it should IMHO

look for a vintage Fender Princeton reverb. Pre-CBS (black faceplate). Or look for one of the tweed ones. They have reissued those over the past few years, but I haven't tried one (I sold my last electric guitar 10 years ago). The old ones shouldn't be too expensive and speakers and tubes can easily be upgraded, if need be.

If you end up playing a gig, you can always mike the princeton.

If you want a little more power, the Twin Reverb is a great amp, and it's cool to tilt it back on its little legs so you can get the guitar over the speakes for some amazing feedback--especially with that hollow-body of yours.

I've started to get the itch for an electric, too. I'm thinking of a Fender Thinline, probably a reissue since the vintage ones are so expensive I wouldn't want to play it much.

Default Depends what type of music you like to play or the sound your going for....I prefer tube amps

because of the warmth. In music, there is no "better" sound, it's all what your going for, imho. Also, watts for solid state and tube amps can't necessarily be compared one-for-one. But, playing by yourself, in a small room, low watts are fine.

Default Yup, the '69 Twin Reverb is the bomb...My favorite amp to play through

plus, the Beatles played stadium concerts with it and didn't even mic it! It's one crisp, clean, loud beast. No amp collection is complete without one of these

Default Good advice below... tube amp at low watts will be a great choice...

though you have options. If you want a really versitile amp that can do everything, check out the stuff by Line6. I'm a hardcore old-school tube purist, but the tone of the Line6 combo amps blew me away. They use computer modeling to emulate a couple dozen different amps with amazing reality. Big bucks, though, around $900 and up.

Congrats on your new guitar!
