Default Difficult gearchange into 2nd when cold?

I have noticed that my 225 TTC has a very difficult gearchange from 1st to 2nd on cold mornings. This effect is amplified if the gearchange is made at rpm's of <3000. It seems beyond this the problem is greatly reduced. Once the car is warm, this is also not a problem.

Has anybody else experienced this??

Default A common problem with manual trannys in cold temps...

transmission fluid thickens when cold thus syncros do not work as well making gear changes difficult..as tranny warms up transmission fluid becomes less thick and shift accordingly easier. Solution...change transmission fluid to synthetic type (such as Red Line)and fluid is not subject to the cold/warm cycle...unless you have a TT in the Artic or in Finland north of the Artic Circle ;-)

Default Uhhhmmm

I never had the syncro problem untill I changed to Redline. Now on a cold morning my shift into 2nd sends chills down my spine.

I must confess, the gearchange into second is scary. It feels really terrible. Should I return it to the garage from where it came, as I have only had it 2 weeks??

Default Try switching ESP off, I know it sounds crazy. But I have the same problem

and every time, without fail, if I turn off ESP for some reason the 1-2 shift is smoother. Not nearly as chunky/clunky as it normally is. Give it a try and see if you can tell any difference.

Default this has been discussed a lot.

I've found that releasing the clutch then depressing it again (as you would in double-clutching, except when you up**** you don't rev-match) helps a lot. Regardless, I'm bringing it up to my serviceman next time I take it in.

Default it's covered by warranty. If notchiness is excessive the dealer will change it.

Keep in mind that it's a normal problem. He may change the synchros to make you feel better but it probably won't make much of a difference. Another reason to let the car warm up and drive it slow for a while. Again, double-clutching helps with the notchiness.

Default Re: it's covered by warranty. If notchiness is excessive the dealer will change it.

I never drive it quickly when it is cold anyway. However, as long as this is a normal problem, I am not overly concerned. I was just a little worried that there was something wrong & the gearbox was going to freeze!!

It seems a little strange that the gearshift is at its worst when the engine is cold, & you upshift at <2000 rpm. If I let it rev to 3000 it seems much smoother.
Does anybody know why this is??

I will also try the esp button, along with the double clutching method.

Default I was shocked...

Shifting is better when warm, but cold it bad. I looked like Kool-aid, but did not smell like Kool-Aid.
