Default Sharing Cable Modem with a Router?

I have a cable modem through Earthlink/Time Warner Cable in Houston. I am trying to use my D-Link Broadband Router with it. I can not get it to work.

I think I need to know how Earthlink/Time Warner Cable authenitcates me. Is it by the MAC address of the cable modem? Or by the MAC address of my ethernet card? Or should i not be worrying about the MAC address and try something else?

Default MAC address is a good place to start

Did you give them a MAC address for your PC ethernet card and then interpose the router?

Of course TWC will know the MAC address of the cable modem and depending on the area may or may not care about the MAC address of the device at the other end of the ethernet cable from the modem.

Have you turned off/reset the cable modem to get it to drop any previous MAC addr?

Can you ping/http to the modem (many of them let you get some stats by opening your browser to some generic addr like 192.168.100.1 or such.

Default Make sure you are NOT using the ethernet cable that is flipped

Some of the services come with a flipped ethernet cable. Sorry, can't recall the official name for the cable, but it only works in peer-to-peer situations (or certain cable modem to computer setups.

If you have a different cable, give it a try.

As for MAC address, you can usually change the router's MAC address to match your NIC if you want.

Default Re: MAC address is a good place to start

I did not give them the MAC address of my PC ethernet card to the cable company. When the cable guy was installing the modem, he called the home office and gave them the MAC address of my cable modem. I think that is the only one they have.

I configured my router to use the MAC address of the cable modem, but it is still not working.

The cable modem works fine if I bypass the router.

I power cycled the cable modem and that did not help.

I can not ping the cable modem.

I don't know what else to try. Any more ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Default I don't know about Time Warner, but they can use either.

They will defenetly verify the MAC of the CM so that you aren't just hooking any old thing up to thier network.

Wether they look at your device MACs, well ... maybe. Before we got out of the business last year, we were developing software for the head end to control this and alocate bandwidth. They were interested in it at the time ....

Default Earthlink (here anyway) requires PPPoE

which is normally supplied to windows clients via winpoet or the like.

When I had earthlink, I made sure the firmware in my linksys was up to date - it supplies PPPoE auth right on the setup page.

Linksys also provide a MAC address clone - so if your cable was installed to some PC then clone that address into the linksys and see if that is your problem. RCN cable uses MAC address up here in Mass.

Default @Home and ATT here on the left coast only use the computer name authentication model.

The MAC of the PC is not even checked... (and neither is the MAC of the cable modem for that matter).

Most routers that are designed to connect a cable/dsl connection to a home network should have all the provisions for supporting all of the predominant authentication models in use today. As an example, here on ATT's system, all I have to do is enter the pre-assigned user ID into my router in the user name field - this is the same ID that most cable companies say to set your computer name to. This ID is the authentication field that the CMTS uses to authenticate a user.

Good luck

Default I had similar problems with Charter and my Linksys. Try this..>>

From what I read, some cable modems store the MAC of your NIC card. I cloned the MAC address of of my NIC card in the router. You should be able to do that through the advanced functions of the router. After cloning the MAC of your NIC in the router, turn off your PC. Once you do that, do not power cycle the router, only do the short reset. Now unplug your cable modem for a couple of minutes and plug it back in. The cable modem should pick up the cloned MAC from the router and the router should take the IP from the DHCP server. Then boot up your PC and let your PC grab it's IP from the DHCP resident in the router.

That is what worked for me. Good luck. Also, your ISP most likely will not give you any support on the router, so don't even bother calling their tech support.
