Sharing Cable Modem with a Router?
I think I need to know how Earthlink/Time Warner Cable authenitcates me. Is it by the MAC address of the cable modem? Or by the MAC address of my ethernet card? Or should i not be worrying about the MAC address and try something else?
Of course TWC will know the MAC address of the cable modem and depending on the area may or may not care about the MAC address of the device at the other end of the ethernet cable from the modem.
Have you turned off/reset the cable modem to get it to drop any previous MAC addr?
Can you ping/http to the modem (many of them let you get some stats by opening your browser to some generic addr like 192.168.100.1 or such.
If you have a different cable, give it a try.
As for MAC address, you can usually change the router's MAC address to match your NIC if you want.
I configured my router to use the MAC address of the cable modem, but it is still not working.
The cable modem works fine if I bypass the router.
I power cycled the cable modem and that did not help.
I can not ping the cable modem.
I don't know what else to try. Any more ideas?
Thanks for your help.
Wether they look at your device MACs, well ... maybe. Before we got out of the business last year, we were developing software for the head end to control this and alocate bandwidth. They were interested in it at the time ....
When I had earthlink, I made sure the firmware in my linksys was up to date - it supplies PPPoE auth right on the setup page.
Linksys also provide a MAC address clone - so if your cable was installed to some PC then clone that address into the linksys and see if that is your problem. RCN cable uses MAC address up here in Mass.

Most routers that are designed to connect a cable/dsl connection to a home network should have all the provisions for supporting all of the predominant authentication models in use today. As an example, here on ATT's system, all I have to do is enter the pre-assigned user ID into my router in the user name field - this is the same ID that most cable companies say to set your computer name to. This ID is the authentication field that the CMTS uses to authenticate a user.

That is what worked for me. Good luck. Also, your ISP most likely will not give you any support on the router, so don't even bother calling their tech support.
