OT: looking for suggestions on buying a new bicycle
need a daily commuter type of bike, 8 miles each way in northern california. I usually stay on paved surfaces, mostly flat and not much if any off road. Plusses for low maintenance, something that can take the abuse as I am pretty rough with stuff, and won't stick out to thieves looking for expensive bikes.
Any suggestions as far was where to go to learn more, brands that are good, etc... When I go to the bike store, I feel as though I am in a car dealership and don't know if I can trust them.
Also, what is wrong with tubeless tires? I never knew they had these but there must be some catch.
cheers!

One idea a friend employed was putting some duct tape on his bike. He chose spots that made it look like it was really bad condition. Now, a piece of duct tape on a metal tube shouldn't do a darn thing to help hold a bike together, but he said it actually worked.
Another idea is to paint it a bland color by hand (with a brush) and then duct tape spots.
Give the impression that the bike isn't that good.
You get the idea...but of course, if it is in the middle of the night, thieves will probably take any bike.
