Driving question for day: When should you use 6th gear?
Should you use it for cruising whenever possible?
Or should it only be used when cruising RPM for 5th (and so on down the line) is above a certain numer (like 3k)?

I shift out of 5th like I shift out of 4th...
And when I'm close to or at my cruising speed, I shift into 6th as long as I'm above 2k. If I'm not needing a lot of torque, I take advantage of the efficiency of cruising in 6th. When I need to accelerate SLOWLY I just leave it in 6th. When I need to accelerate FAST I downshift to 4th or 5th and punch it.
Use the same logic you use for other gears. Use the appropriate gear for the situation. If you want to accelerate fast from 30mph, you will use a lower gear, but if you are just cruising down the road with no need to punch it you will use a higher gear with less torque.

generally I get into 6th once I pass 65mph and want to cruise...
otherwise I won't get into 6th before I hit 100mph. Really depends for me...judged mostly by engine sound and anticipation of what I want to do next.

ANYTIME you are cruising above about 2000 rpm. If you need to accelerate...
stay in 6th if it gives sufficient acceleration with pedal to metal. If not, downshift 1 or 2 or 3 gears. Running the engine at part throttle in lower gears wastes fuel and wears out the engine faster. It DOES NOT harm the engine to make it pull in higher gears. On the contrary, some engines enperience ring flutter when they are run at higher rpm under little or no load.

Depends on traffic, IMO,
When really heavy (lots of cars but moving fast) and I may need to move quickly, I stay in 4 or 5 depending on circumstances
When i am in no hurry and want to rest RPMs, I'll go to 6 skipping 5th
When hiway cruising and lighter traffic, I go to 6th
