Default why do people "key"?

My gas cap got keyed, just a scratch. And a few weeks ago someone smeared an Eskimo pie on my windshield. This is n+o+t+h+i+n+g compared to what other people report (Kim!!) having had happen to their cars. Still, it bothers me.

Why do people key? There's something in us. Have you ever seen something that was absolutely perfect, say, a Fabergé egg or a Rolls Royce, and the idea passed through your mind, involuntarily, to smash it or scratch it? Maybe we just can't tolerate the existence of perfection, at least if it doesn't belong to us.

I can see keying as rebellion or protest by have-nots against what is perceived as an unjust society. But I think that's a contributing factor to the first--it's something in us (humans, I mean) that makes people do it. Similarly, a fresh field of snow: you just CAN'T WAIT to sully it somehow.

Does this make sense to anyone?!

Default My car has been kicked and door slammed into side.

The kick I can sort of understand, we had layoffs at work, and well, those are the decisions I get to make. $1200 kick though. The door dings (this is more like a door dent) pisses me off more. Especially since I am SO careful where I park!

Default My car was keyed when it was just about brand new ....

Some 'West Virginian red-neck' at the motel the Quattro Club crew had picked for the track event at Summit Point last October decided I was in 'HIS' parking spot, near the room he always stayed in. To prove it, he parked 2 inches away from me in the middle of a planting bed with his utility truck and keyed the entire rear quarter panel of my car. We decided he was too big an *** for us to even call the police to try to press charges (he might decide to do worse damage) but I still wish I had let the air out of his tires (at a minimum).

I think the post below summed up what's with these people.

Maybe you just pissed off the wrong guy and are overanalyzing the situation? Just a thought...

Default I don't think that there is any excuse

for these acts of vandalism. It's unfortunate that some people have not been taught right from wrong and find little joy or love in their life.

I expect that they trying to fill this void by causing pain or suffering to someone else and undoubtedly get a sort of twisted joy form these acts. I don't feel sorry for them. The fact that they are capable of such acts without any remorse is a sure sign that they will never succeed in love or in life.

Default Follow up question: Where do people park?

Obviously it depends on the environment, etc., but my roomate and I were talking about this recently. Sundays, we usually go out for Dim Sum. Our favorite place is in a strip-mall. I managed to grab the parking place right next to the door to the restaurant. My roomate was shocked that I would park my pretty car where everyone would see it.

I argued that it is a good idea to park in a visible place with lots of people. While the car is more visible and therefore more of a target, it is lessened by the fact that there is more of a possibility that there will be witnesses which may dissuade all but the biggest jerks from doing something.

(The follow-up to my argument is I get the entertainment value of walking out and seeing a huddle of people standing around ogling my car.)

She argued that it is better to park the car someplace inconspicuous. If people don't know it's there, they won't mess with it. I respond that if they do see it, they could really beat on it and get away entirely.

I don't believe there's a "right" answer to this, so it's just sort of an opinion question...

Default If you've forgotten...

I posted a link to my original message a few days ago in the original thread dealing with KimTT's car, but here's an article from the local paper from last summer. Basically a city council candidate keyed a car, her excuse... will her words are better than any summary I can give...

City Council Candidate Keys Lotus Esprit

Default A) Jealousy B) Alcohol C) General meanness D) All of the above

I live in Boston, specifically Kenmore Square. That's right around the corner (literally) from both Fenway Park and several dance clubs. The area is also largely populated with college students (as is much of Boston, but this is one of the focal points).

I park in a garage. It costs me a lot of money each month. My car hasn't been vandalized. I also use a car cover, but that's more for mystery garage drippings (hard water, lime deposits, rust from pipes, etc.) than vandalism, but it can't hurt.

When I go out and about, I try to park where I'll be able to see the car. If that's not possible, then I'll park way out in the parking lot away from everyone else, as door ding protection.

Default But if it was illegally parked in a handicap space, I'd feel it was reasonable

If you block a hydrant or park in a handicap space without cause (being a fire truck and having a handicap plate/sticker, respectively) you deserve whatever happens to your car. I'm a really peaceful person, but I can't stand that sort of arrogance and disrepect.
