Q for Electrically minded folks... what kind of Volt/Amp test equipment to buy?

Q for Electrically minded folks... what kind of Volt/Amp test equipment to buy?
I know what I want this tool to do, but have no idea what type to buy and exactly what specs I need it to have.
Here's what I need to be able to check (BTW, this is for the Motorhome, not the TT).
- Run tests to determine whether or not my rear compartment batteries are being charged by the engine compartment alternator. Remember, this is a motorhome - with a bank of 3 'extra' Marine/Deep Cycle batterie.
- use as "test light" to see amount of AMPS/volts at various hot points
- Check to see if solenoids are working properly when switched and at 'rest'.
- determine amount of battery output.
- Motorhomes maintain a 12volt electrical system - is this important when making a choice on this type of tool?
I think this about covers it. I am not an electrical engineeer, and don't think I need a $250 dollar tool. Just want a device that will help to do the above tests (and maybe more that I haven't thought of yet).
Ideas?

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but a good device anyway >>>
Heart Interphase makes some really nice inverter/charger systems. (If you don't know this, an inverter gives your 120VAC without running your genset.)
Along with these systems, they sell a few different monitoring panels that are really nice.
As for just plain electrical test gear, Fluke equipment has to be about the best I've used... but if it's for occasional and light duty use, your radio shack could probably set you up cheaper.
