AUDI CLUB OF SOUTH FLORIDA RALLY 1.0 - SEPTEMBER 29th
What is a Rally:
In the broad sense of the word, a rally is any gathering of individuals to celebrate a common cause. When the word is applied to automotive enthusiasts, the concept generally implies more than just a gathering of people and their cars but also some sort of driving event. Competition and fun are at the heart of the automotive rally. Unlike a race or parking-lot event (such as an autocross), the automotive rally is run on roads, usually open for public use.
What to Expect:
Each team is made up of a car (duh...), a driver and a navigator. The driver and navigator can maintain their roles or switch back and forth throughout the rally. A set of directions and questions will be given to each team at the drivers meeting. The team who answers the most questions correctly and follows the directions closest, wins. Sounds simple right. The directions may be very straight forward, or not. Questions will be very obvious, or not. Here's some examples of what can happen: You miss a turn, your mileage will be wrong; You are talking (or arguing) and miss a road sign or landmark; A competing team gives you "dis" information at a mandatory stop; You get lost... Get the idea. This is as much about luck as it is skill.
We will launch from the service lanes at Braman Audi in West Palm Beach. Cars will be released at one minute intervals until everyone is on the course. This is not a timed event so obey all traffic laws. The course is 70 to 85 miles and includes a variety of different driving sections such as navigating downtown streets, cruising the beaches, and really stretching it out in the everglades. It includes 3-5 mandatory stops where teams will have to find answers to questions about the stop. The mandatory stops will hold some interesting surprises. Total time should take anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 hours.
The rally will be ending at Coconuts on the Beach, Singer Island Hilton Resort. The awards ceremony will take place on the beach front deck at the Tikki Bar and Restaurant. Afterwards the teams are encouraged to hang out and enjoy the reggae music, swim at the pool, snorkel on the reefs right off the beach or even make arrangements through the hotel to go Para-sailing.
Things to Bring:
Family Band Radios: If you don't have one, run out and buy one....they will be VERY handy for the rally (and as you know, we use them in all our club trips). You can pick one up at Wal-Mart for $20.
Navigator: But if you don't have one, it will be best if you follow one of our club members who does have a navigator or you will get lost.
Common Sense: If you don't bring this it will be a long day. You'll get a lot more driving in that everyone else.
