Default TT quattro question for the gods

Read this

Now, after reading this, i'm assuming it's the ESP that kicked in and killed the gas...i know in my old old fwd passat, the traction control did this to the front wheels....

if this guy turned off esp, he would've/should've been able to get out? or am i wrong aout the haldex system?!

That is correct. My quattro has no ESP, and I experience initial 4 wheel slip starting on snow/ice

Default now does that initial slip continue/continue so much that the computer

forces the engine to cut fuel....possibly so much so that it'll stall ?

Default Nope, because I have no ESP, so it goes right to AWD.

On my previous bmw 328is, I frequently experienced this type of traction-control-induced stall, though.

Last weekend in unplowed rural Vermont, I was able to spin all 4 wheels on the snow and drift around like a rally car with a feeling of complete control. Basically, with no ESP, it's all haldex and tire that's keeping you on the road.

Default By the way, as far as that link goes, that guy should have turned off the ESP

I believe it actually says in the manual to turn it off when driving on ice and snow, I know I've read that before. It's common knowledge that traction control and stability measures are pretty much useless and even counterproductive in snow, where traction basically comes down to tire vs road. That's why winter tires are so important.

And while we're on the subject, it's a little known fact that ABS actually increases stopping distance on snow by decreasing the total amount of friction. It also increases overall stopping distance on dry pavement in favor of increasing lateral stability, but many believe this is an acceptable tradeoff.

Default I noticed this happening with my TT, and I have ESP. It cuts the fuel to the point that it'll stall.

Well this was last winter then I just started driving this car in snow. I really was in just too high of a gear.

But yes, disabling ESP should have let him get out. ESP cuts the throttle when it detects four wheel slip (or so the rumor goes)

Turn off ESP, hit the gas, and you can really feel the power getting thrown around between the wheels.

Default BS BS BS. (long)

i've put my winters only mid december.
and even thou Toronto weather was cooperating we had few snow falls. and i did get it to spin it was hard to do it thou. if you been on this forum long you must've notice there were few post about ESP & AWD, some guys say thay cant get to spin the wheels even when ESP is off, do they have a better car or is them selfs. i'm driving since i was 12 & dreven all kinds of cars & bikes. in 99.99% off all spins it is THE OPERATOR.if he would turn off ESP he might have get out, or in his case i think he would get in to the ditch. in my opinion if ONE does know how operate the MAchine do not tuch it. by the way i had a Full conversion Chevy VAN, REAR WHEEL drive, with no interior, i've paid $30for used all season tires, for 2 years of drving in Toronto, i have not got my wheels to spin or did i ever got stock.
And finaly He should be writing only about Summer driving.

Default do what i do. i have small shavle. but seriosly>>>

you can put the best snow tire on TT & and lets think you were able to lock all wheels so they will all turn no metter what. now it snow alot, like you said ALOT, unless you got shavle you staing there. the TT are very low & in this case it the clearance under the car that is more important. but in realety if snows just alot you will get out but stil there has to be few favoring factors.1) you knoing what you doing.
2) you are not parked on ice. 3) you might need space on both ends rear & front.
at the end it still come to the operator expiriance & weather. PS: mother nature allways wins.

Default well i had a lowered a4 that did fine in snowstorms- just want to be sure

i'd be getting the same or roughly the same amt of winter performance out of a haldex diff. vs. a torsen diff.
