Default Question re "cool down" after hard (no pun intended) driving...

if I get near home, and then want to stop at whatever, lets say a convienence store for a couple of minutes. Do you let the car cool down before going into the store or do you just shut it off, then when you drive home the last mile or so take it easy and idle at home? PS kinda off topic but the other day I saw a 1974 - 1975 Audi 100LS. Can't believe still on the road. My Father bought one of those new back in 1974, and if 2 days went by not in the shop the mechanic would call to see what was up. Nice car though when it ran.

Default Cool down>>>

If you are driving a 225 TT then this is less of an issue since it comes with a 'turbo timer' that allows for an electric cooling pump to run after engine shut down. But general rule of thumb for turbo cars is that after a bit of spirited driving do last mile or so at a leisure pace and then let engine idle a minute before engine shut down. Some even with the 225TT do this after agressive driving just as a safety margin. Main thing is to avoid really hard driving and just doing an immediate shut down if you do not have a 'turbo timer' system....could cook your bearings and will cost you some big $ to replace turbo.

Default if i boost moderately on a ride...then i'll cool off for a few secs...

if i barely boost at all...i shut it down...
if i boost even 5mins earlier...than i sit and wait...(this done after testing all three scenarios)

To cool down is your choice. What happens if you don't cool down is, the turbo is very hot therefore any oil in it will breakdown on the molecular level.
You can either let it idle for 2-3 minutes and draw the heat out of the turbo with the "cooler" oil.
You can install a turbo timer which will continue circulating the oil after you shut down. This will take the engine out of warranty.
You can use synthetic oil which will handle the high temperature much better than the "normal engine oil.

Default Thanks to all who responded. However, no one answered my

question. I know you should cool down the car by idling/easy driving. My question was, can you shut it off for a minute or two to run into a store and then before you park it at home "cool it down" or would you cool it before a "temporary" (ie run into a store) stop?

Default Don't worry about it... turbo bearings w/ water jackets don't ever...

get hot enough to cause problems. That coking jazz is from the stone-age, before auto makers figured out how to make more reliable turbo cars. And if you insist on running synthetic oil, all the better.

I seriously doubt that you could run hard enough just before parking at a convenience store to really have a concern. In my mind, you'd have to go from wide open to dead stop and really make an effort to *cause* a problem.
