Default TT-East autoX dilemma and tire question: Anyone regret 235/40/18 choice? Thoughts?

Really had a great time throwing the TT around the autoX course at the Tire Rack with the Chicago area Audi group last fall. Kirby and I even won in our respective divisions (nice goin' man!). Not only was it great to see the TT's abilities around the course, and how it responded to ridiculous handling requests, but I feel I'm safer behind the wheel now. (I'll have to test it all over again with the neuspeed bar and spacers now). The TT is really pretty amazing how it can handle...even better than I thought. You should really consider doing the autoX if at all possible!

Anyway, as you can see below, my pilot sports (or more specifically, their sidewalls) paid a price for my sliding around. Not a problem really, since another aim of doing the autoX was to wear their remaining treadlife off to get new tires this year : ) However, the tread's still there and the sidewalls aren't : ( Worse, I can tell now that part of the sidewall ain't there in any sort of spirited handling exercise. They just don't feel the same. They're still worn a bit unevenly from my lack of camber correction, (ABT springs/ Bilstein sport struts, *now* with OCT adj. arms) and howl pretty badly, so I'm planning on replacing them with PS2's or the F1's..........but......I really don't want to drop $1k on new rubbers and then burn their sidewalls off in June. (These kind of tires don't last me more than a season usually anyway, but June's too early in the season..)

Soooo...what do you think? Can't really afford racing slicks, wouldn't drag them to TT-E anyway, and don't really want to sit on the sidelines. And driving tame is just not an option here... : )

Also, anyone fattened up their tires to the 235/40/18 size all around, and thought they were too wide or adversely affected handling? John, thought you did this, right?

Thanks, appreciate your thoughts as always.

why not get a set of Kuhmo Ecstas MX? good for what you are using them for.

Default You should go buy some used 15" Jetta/GTI wheels and put Kuhmo Victoracers on them.

Cars autocross better with smaller, lighter wheels.

Default I'm running 235/40/18

I will do it again with my next tires. No issues and no regrets for me. I tend to run higher pressures than many so my sidewalls are doing OK after 2 track events.

Default What tire pressures were you running at the AutoX?

It is possible that you were rolling over the sidewalls.

I don't think so, had the pressures up high for the event, just really put the car through its paces I think.

Thanks,

Rich

been thinkin' bout that, but part of the fun is the "max grip" which is a bit less with the K'ho's.
