2001 vs. 2002
I have been doing some research on '01 and '02 TT's. I have been hearing a lot of problems with windows and coil packs on the '01s has anyone on this board had a lot of these problems? Or is this just something that you keep hearing about? I just wonder because there is a pretty big price difference between an 01 and 02.

I have a 2001 225 Coupe with few problems.
Now I'm holding my breath.
50k miles. Instrument cluster was replaced under warranty. Privacy shelf was replaced a couple of times for rattles. New Haldex controller to reduce interference with AM reception.
I made them replace the rear glass because of some distortion.
There's probably more variation between cars than between years.
My car doesn't have the affected coil packs.

Most of the 2001 problems would have probably been fixed by now >>
such as (at least with 225):
1) cluster
2) fuel sender
3) coil packs
4) front sway bar creaks
and some few other minor issues. other than that, you figure, after 4 years, you should be in the clear. I would probably get a 2002 if I had a choice, even if it was a few dollars more.

This forum made give a false impression regarding the TT and its reliability.......
Just reading this forum might give you the impression that the TT is a service nightmare.
This forum is a great source of knowledge of the TT so most people come here to find answers to their service questions and share tech tips.
If there is a problem with somones TT, you will hear it here first. Dont let that give you the impression that all or even most TT's are problem cars.
2001 or 2002? The 2001 is the first year for the 225hp motor so there may be a few "First year issues". Not enough to not buy a pre-owned 2001.
If you find a nice clean 2001, go for it.
This forum is a great source of knowledge of the TT so most people come here to find answers to their service questions and share tech tips.

thanks man, yeah I'm coming from an S4...
I remember all of the paranoid ideas you get off of these forums! I used to read some of the stuff the s4 guys would have happen and my car NEVER ever had the issues some of the guys on there did, so I understand the generated paranoia that can be brought up in here.

Maybe I just had a car built on a friday, but my 2001 180QC has had:
central locking unit replaced
privacy shelf replaced
privacy shelf replaced again
clutch cylinder replaced
clutch cylinder replaced again
hazard light switch replaced
hazard light switch replaced again
ESP sensor (longitudinal 1) replaced
ESP sensor (longitudinal 2) replaced
All of these occured in a period of less than 2 years (total of 45 days in the shop). So I would stronly recommend not buying a 2001 model year.
