Default HELP! Brake Emergency!!!

So I put the new pads on yesterday. When we were doing it, I accidentally loosened the wrong bolt and let a small amount of brake fluid out of the back lines. Thought nothing of it... it wasn't that much. Today, go to look at the rear pads and it looks like the piston has been putting constant pressure on the pads. The new rears are almost already down to what looks to be about 50%. I followed everything step by step from Bipes's site and I have no idea why there would be force acting on those brakes when they're not being used. Also, it still seems like I don't have a lot of braking power and the car has been driven about 100 miles.

HELP

Default When you were compressing the rear brake callipers down......

to change pads, did you make sure you twisted the pistons ALL the way back down? Most of these have grooves I have found, and if the brake pad isn't seated in the groove, this could cause it to bind.

Default Had this problem on an old Jetta....

e-brake stayed engaged thought to be due to the rubber bushings that carried the e-brake line wearing out, it stuck, and the calipers glowed orange like a stove after going a few blocks!

You might want someone to put it up on a lift and follow that line all the way back. Maybe top off that fluid too.

Good luck,
Rich

Default The pads not seated in the grove

properly would make sense... but wouldn't cause all 4 rear pads to wear evenly...

...or maybe that the front brakes aren't working at all

Default Is there 1 single brake line to the rear?

I'm not sure... loosening that bolt without putting pressure on the brakes would probably put air in the line, but would that be the cause of the brakes being eaten up so much?

Default Which side? Did you compress/kink the e-brake cable with the jack? It's right near the donut pad...

if you kinked this, the cable is pulling the piston in all the time.
If you did this, you have boiled your brake fluid, and that is one reason you are experiencing poor brakes in general. Also, you may have induced some air in the lines by loosening the brake line.
