Winter tire sizing question>>>>
thinking about going with 205/50 VR17 tires vs stock 225/45 VR17's on my winter tires. I know the higher sidewall helps with potholes and all...and the narrower tread digs' down instead of floating on top more...
I was thinking the stock size would look better, so i am leaning that way...price difference is minimal....just wanted a second/third et all opinion (s).
BTW- the wheels are the stock 5 spokers!

....when it does, stop by, and I'll leave you covered in snow dust and ice. :-)
You want a tire that will give you grip on those roads with snow on them, so when you are at a stop sign, you can leave that Jeep Grand Cherokee sitting next to you in a cloud of snow-dust, and be 2 blocks away before he gets traction.

First TT winter, but...
I've lived in MN, ND, or CO my entire life and this coming winter will be my 32nd as a driver. Since the advent of fwd and awd cars, I've never owned a set of snows.
In fact the 3 series (rwd) I owned in CO was ran in all seasons. The 3 or 4 times it snowed each winter I slid around a little, but I still went just as fast during my rush hour commutes as the Jeep Cherokee in the lane next to me.
While an all season tire won't give me optimal traction, I'm thinking it would be "good enough". Sure Mr. Bee-otch will leave me in the "snow dust and ice" as we race down his street. But I have to think that overall I'd be happier with better performing tires for the 98% of the time I won't need optimum snow grip.
That being said, I'm still heavily leaning to the Nokian WR tires, and perhaps the Perilli Pzero Nero M&S. I know the Perilli's are all season tires, but they are better rated on snow and ice than most of the winter tires on tirerack.com.
Still, I have my OEM Perilli P6's on the factory wheels and I'll run them at least through the first snow.

I had Dunlop M2s on last season and liked them. Switched to Pirelli
PZero Nero M&S' this year though as the Dunlops were shot. Used both in the stock 17 size. They'll get you were you need to go when you need to do it.
