CEL came on - could it be the gas?
CEL came on 10 miles down road and thats when I pulled over a put some octane boost in. Used all the gas and yesterday filled with High test 94 octane and again put in octane boost but today the light is still on. Will this reset? The car seems a little short of maximum boost as well so did the computer reduce max boost while the light is on?
Help and advice please.
BTW - I don't have a VAG-Com.
Then again, I didn't try for "maximum boost" after I made this error, and I'd recommend you don't either. See, with the lower octane juice in there, you definitely will have some detonation under heavy load which the knock sensor will report back to the ECU, and your timing will be retarded. The result will be less power.
Take it easy, run this tank completely out, then fill back up with 93. Should be fine. After you do that, you can reset the CEL (if it hasn't on its own) by unplugging the battery for a period of time (do a search, not sure as I have a VAG-COM).
See if it comes back on, if not, it hopefully was the gas.
Oh, and a word of advice on "octane boost" products. Read the fine print. Most products claim to "increase octane by X points." Well, wouldn't you like to know what a "point" is? 5 points in an average size tankful of 92 raises it to 92.5. Yeah, total SCAM!!!!
